2025 Oscars Hailed as Best in Years Thanks to Conan O'Brien

And the winner is… the 2025 Oscars! Audiences have hailed the 97th Academy Awards as the best celebration of the movie industry in a very long time, with a large portion of the praise for the show being awarded to its host, Conan O’Brien. As the night went on, spectators took to social media to not only dish out their opinions on this year’s winners but also share their thoughts on the ceremony itself. The consensus was generally positive as people united to celebrate the broadcast, lauding it as one of the greatest in the event’s storied history.

The Oscars have experienced a steady decline in viewership over recent years, but Sunday night’s ceremony seemingly sparked some excitement among viewers for the first time in a long while, putting Hollywood’s biggest night back in lights. A lot of the discussion spilled out on X/Twitter, where people commended the production of the show, the celebrities on presenting duties (including a particularly memorable turn from Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan), and the performance of O’Brien, who was responsible for hosting the show.

The highest viewed Oscars were when ‘Titanic’ won in 1998. The awards have not gotten anywhere near those numbers since. Why?

O’Brien had teased this year’s Oscars in the lead-up to the prestigious event, offering insight into what movie fans could expect from the ceremony (which aired live on ABC and streamed on Hulu on Mar. 2). The comedian and presenter didn’t fail to deliver. He hit the ground running with his opening monologue, which poked fun at the controversy surrounding Netflix’s Emilia Pérez, and he continued to draw big laughs throughout the night. Some viewers labeled him one of the “best” Oscars hosts to ever grace the stage, while others called for the Academy to “bring him back next year.”

O’Brien is certainly no stranger to the spotlight, having had a more than two-decade hosting career as the face of Late Night with Conan O’Brien, The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien, and Conan. He also previously served as a writer on Saturday Night Live and The Simpsons. In addition, the Academy announced in November that the late-night legend would be stepping up to host the Oscars for the very first time. In a statement, Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Janet Yang said they were “thrilled and honored” to have him headline the show.

“We are thrilled and honored to have the incomparable Conan O’Brien host the Oscars this year. He is the perfect person to help lead our global celebration of film with his brilliant humor, his love of movies, and his live TV expertise. His remarkable ability to connect with audiences will bring viewers together to do what the Oscars do best–honor the spectacular films and filmmakers of this year.”

O’Brien took over the Oscars gig from Jimmy Kimmel, who turned down the chance to host the Academy Awards for a fifth time, having been at the helm of Hollywood’s biggest night in 2017, 2018, 2023, and 2024. It seems that the Academy has now found a worthy replacement, but O’Brien has some catching up to do to beat Bob Hope’s record-breaking Oscars hosting duties, spanning 19 ceremonies.
