So, pack your sunglasses and get ready to kick off your summer with our top destinations for a sunny escape.

Where’s hot in June in Europe?

Andalusia, Spain

Temperature: 24°C to 32°C
Sunshine hours: 11 hours
Flight time: Two hours, 45 minutes (Malaga or Seville)

Andalusia, Spain’s southernmost region, stretches from the eastern edge near Murcia to the west, bordering Portugal, with the tiny (yet notable) Gibraltar just a short distance away.

For classic beach breaks and poolside holidays, you can’t go wrong with Málaga, Marbella, or the entire Costa del Sol. Málaga, Pablo Picasso’s childhood hometown, also boasts a museum dedicated to his work, just a short stroll from the Roman Cathedral.

If you’re craving more history and culture, take a trip to Seville, renowned for its Moorish architecture, intricate mosaics, and as the filming location for Dorne in Game of Thrones. Córdoba, with its famous Mosque-Cathedral, is also a must-see for history enthusiasts.

For those willing to venture inland, Granada and Almeria are great options. Don’t forget to visit Cádiz, a coastal gem known for its stunning beaches, charming old town, and delicious seafood.

Bulgaria

Bulgaria is perfect for every type of traveller (Picture: Getty)

Temperature: 22ºC (up to 27ºC)
Sunshine hours: 10 to 12 hours
Flight time: Three hours, 10 minutes

For a mix of history, nature and beach relaxation, head to Bulgaria. It’s a short trip from the UK, with flights taking just over three hours.

With temperatures averaging around 22ºC and reaching highs of 27ºC, the weather is warm but comfortable — perfect for sightseeing or lounging by the coast.

In the capital, Sofia, you’ll find a blend of Roman, Ottoman, and Soviet-era influences. You can wander through the city’s historic centre, stopping at landmarks like Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, Boyana Church, and the ancient Serdica ruins.

Sunny Beach is perfect if you’re after a lively atmosphere and golden sands, while Nessebar, a UNESCO-listed town, charms visitors with its cobbled streets, medieval churches, and seafront restaurants.

Metro’s top tip:

Metro‘s Gergana Krasteva grew up in Bulgaria. For the first 18 years of her life, she spent summer exploring the Black Coast, and now she’s shared its top spots with us.

Sunny Beach is the most popular resort, but for a more authentic experience, head to Cape Kaliakra — a stunning cove framed by cliffs. Gergana spent every summer there, along with nearby Rusalka beach, and says the water alone is worth the trip.

For even more seclusion, Durankulak and Krapets beaches are Bulgaria’s best-kept secrets — she tells us locals have been steering tourists to Sunny Beach for years.

If you have some time take a trip to Plovdiv, Europe’s oldest city and just two hours from Sofia. Founded in 6000 BC, Plovdiv has a rich history, from the Ancient Theatre of Philippopolis to the cobbled streets of the Old Town, blending medieval and 19th-century architecture.

It has been named the European Capital of Culture twice, most recently in 2019, making it a must-visit for history and art enthusiasts.

Crete, Greece

Fall in love with the charming streets of Chania’s Old Town (Picture: Getty)

Temperature: 25ºC (up to 29ºC)
Sunshine hours: 12 hours
Flight time: Four hours

For a sun-soaked island escape, Crete is a fantastic choice.

With temperatures averaging around 25°C in June and reaching highs of 27°C, the island offers the perfect warmth for both relaxation and adventure.

Spend some time exploring the charming streets of Chania’s Old Town, where Venetian and Ottoman influences blend beautifully in its architecture, or if you’re up for a challenge, go for a hike.

The Samaria Gorge offers one of Europe’s most stunning treks, cutting through dramatic cliffs and wild landscapes. For a taste of ancient history, the Palace of Knossos — believed to be Europe’s oldest city — lets you step back into the world of the Minoans.

Of course, no trip to Crete is complete without time spent on its breathtaking beaches. From the pink-hued sands of Elafonissi to the shallow, lagoon-like waters of Balos, there’s no shortage of stunning spots to unwind.

Where to stay in Crete:

Metro’s Pierra Willix stayed in Mirabello Bay in Crete for her first all-inclusive holiday — and she says it’s the best place she’s ever stayed at.

Just an hour’s drive from Heraklion Airport, Mirabello Bay Luxury Resort sits right on the beachfront, offering the right mix of seclusion and convenience. It’s only a six-minute drive to the lively port city of Agios Nikolaos, but still feels private, with plenty to explore nearby, from charming local villages to ancient ruins.

Lisbon, Portugal

Lisbon afternoon
Portuguese capital Lisbon has everything you need for a sunny city break (Picture: Getty)

Temperature: 20°C to 25°C
Sunshine hours: 10 hours
Flight time: Two hours, 45 minutes

The Portuguese capital of Lisbon is the kind of city break destination worthy of a chef’s kiss.

It’s got just about everything you could want. The weather is grand (some of the best in Europe), there’s a pastel-hued old town and castles, towers and monasteries to explore – and the whole country is known for its truly incredible wine.

If that’s not enough to convince you, perhaps the vintage-style trams designed to carry you through the city’s hilly streets just might.

To get a view like the one pictured above, you’ll also want to make your way to one of several miradouros (viewpoints) – and when you’re exhausted from your trip around the city, you can take a break to try Portugal’s famed pastel de nata (custard tart).

If you’ve got the time, a day trip to Sintra’s stunning, bright-yellow castle and to the town of Evora is worth it.

Madrid, Spain

Temperature: 23°C (up to 30°C)
Sunshine hours: 12 hours
Flight time: Two hours, 30 minutes

For a sun-kissed city break, the capital of Spain, Madrid, is a great option.

With temperatures averaging around 23°C but with the potential to soar towards the 30s, it’ll be just the right amount of heat for exploring this attractive centre on foot.

Chill out at El Retiro Park, wander the gardens of the Royal Palace of Madrid (where the Spanish Royal Family hold their official ceremonies), eat out at Saint Michael Market or browse one of many, many art museums.

While you won’t be stuck for things to do, it’s worth noting that there are no beaches in Madrid.

So if you can’t resist a day at the seaside, you’ll need to hop on a train to the coastal city of Valencia, and you’ll be there in less than two hours.

Puglia, Italy

Polignano a Mare, Puglia, Italy

Temperature: 23°C to 26°C
Sunshine hours: Nine to 10 hours
Flight time: Two hours, 45 minutes (to Bari)

Southern Italy in June? No explanation needed, really.

But, for the sake of it, Puglia (or Apulia) is nestled in the heel part of Italy’s famed boot shape and perhaps doesn’t always get as much love as it deserves.

After all, just about everywhere in Italy appeals: history, incredible food, beautiful towns and beaches galore. And there are some very famous names: Rome. Sicily. Tuscany. The Amalfi Coast.

Puglia’s main port city is Bari, with Lecce and Brindisi also worth a visit. They, along with other towns, are often reported to be home to some of Italy’s loveliest beaches.

June is a wonderful time to go for a dip in the sea, as the region’s waters are typically around 23°C at this point in the year. Ahhh, what bliss.

From a gastronomical point of view, you’ll be pleased as punch in Puglia too. Bread, focaccia, fish, olive oil and orecchiette pasta (known as ‘little ears’) are all specialities here.

Metro’s top tip:

Metro’s Liv Woosey says Puglia is the perfect spot for some summer sun. It gets very hot in peak season, but if you visit in June, the weather is just right — warm enough to relax by the pool but still comfortable for exploring.

Alberobello is a must-visit — go in the evening when the daytime crowds thin out.

Liv recommends staying in Locorotondo, a stunning hilltop town with a choice of boutique hotels or villas with pools.

The Cyclades, Greece

Oia Santorini Greece

Temperature: 25°C to 28°C
Sunshine hours: 11 hours
Flight time: Four hours, five minutes (to Santorini)

Island-hopping in the Cyclades couldn’t be any hotter or more picturesque.

June is a lovely time to go and explore some of these gorgeous Greek places clustered in the Aegean Sea — but don’t expect to hit them all. There are 220 islands and islets!

Most famous are Santorini, known for its striking blue-roofed white buildings overlooking the water, and glamorous Mykonos – plus Milos, Naxos and Paros.

Amorgos is a site for religious tourism thanks to the Monastery of the Virgin Mary. Delos, meanwhile, is an archaeological point of interest designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

Ios is where to go for drinks and dancing, while Syros, Irakleia and Tinos are all worthwhile stops with perfect beaches.

Though small, Kimolos is a must-visit, as it’s not only gorgeous but very relaxed and peaceful.

If you want to miss the crowds, we’ve got you covered with our list of the best lesser-known Greek islands for dodging tourists in 2025.

The islands of Croatia

Temperature: 23°C (Up to 27°C)
Sunshine hours: 12 hours
Flight time: Two hours, 20 minutes

Croatia is usually a safe bet weather-wise in June, with temperatures regularly in the mid-20s and rarely dropping below, as July – the hottest month in the country – approaches.

You could visit anywhere and have an amazing experience – from the capital Zagreb and Game Of Thrones location Dubrovnik to the natural wonders of Plitvice National Park.

But island-hopping is another good option, starting off from Split, Rijeka, Zadar or Pula.

For a truly special stay before you’re off to the islands, Metro’s Gergana Krasteva suggests the Grand Hotel Brioni, a five-star Radisson property in Pula, on the tip of Croatia’s Istrian Peninsula. Voted the country’s best hotel in 2023, it also holds a key place in its history.

And then, where to start? Resort island Hvar is probably the Balkan nation’s best-loved among tourists, as it is perfectly positioned in the Adriatic Sea – while Brač is known as a windsurfing paradise with crisp white-sand beaches.

But with more than 1,200 islands and islets scattered around, your hopping holiday hardly stops there. Krk, Vis and Korčula are three more islands we recommend adding to your list.

Metro’s top tip:

I visited Dubrovnik and Split in June last year, and the one thing I tell everyone is: don’t miss the ferry to Lokrum Island. Just a 30-minute boat ride from Dubrovnik’s Old Town, this hidden gem has quiet swimming spots with the clearest waters — so bring a towel because once you see it, you won’t be able to resist a dip.

The Adriatic coast is incredible in June — the water is warm, and the scenery is breathtaking. Sunset cruises might seem a bit touristy, but they’re worth it for the views alone.

From Split, we took a day trip to Krka National Park. It was hot and a little crowded, but the waterfalls were a spectacular natural wonder worth seeing.

Where is it hot in June? The best short-haul destinations

Agadir, Morocco

Agadir’s small marina is a great spot for lunch or coffee (Picture: Getty)

Temperature: 23ºC (up to 28ºC)
Sunshine hours: Nine
Flight time: Around four hours

For a beach getaway with a touch of Moroccan charm, Agadir is a great choice — and with flights from the UK taking just 3.5 hours, it’s an easy escape to the sun.

June temperatures average around 20ºC, with highs reaching 26ºC, making it warm but not overwhelming — ideal for both relaxing by the sea and exploring the city.

Agadir’s 10km-long beach is its main attraction, offering golden sands and a lively promenade, lined with cafés and restaurants. Whether you want to surf or take a sunset camel ride, there’s plenty to do along the coast.

For panoramic views, head up to the Agadir Oufella Ruins, the remains of an old kasbah that overlooks the city and ocean.

If you’re in the mood for a traditional Moroccan experience, visit the Souk El Had, one of the largest markets in the country, where you can browse everything from spices and ceramics to handmade rugs.

Agadir is also a great base for exploring more of Morocco’s coast. Nearby, the laid-back fishing villages of Taghazout and Tamraght are a surfer’s paradise, while the historic town of Essaouira, with its blue-and-white medina and fortress walls, is well worth the trip.

Metro’s top tip:

Metro’s Martina Andretta visited Agadir and spent a long weekend near Taghazout, a charming Berber fishing village on the Atlantic coast, just 20km from the city.

Popular with surfers, yogis, and Europeans seeking an authentic escape, it’s grown in popularity over the last few years, as new resorts have opened.

You’ll find beachfront rooms with stunning sunsets at affordable prices, and she recommends heading to nearby Paradise Valley, an oasis in the Atlas Mountains, that offers breathtaking views for photographers and hikers alike.

Jordan

June is a good time to visit Jordan – home to ancient wonder Petra (Picture: Getty)

Temperature: 23°C (up to 30°C)
Sunshine hours: 13 hours
Flight time: Four hours, 50 minutes

Middle Eastern country Jordan is unsurprisingly hot during the summer months.

It’s a bucket list destination for many, and visiting just after spring means being able to enjoy it in milder temperatures — as it can, on occasion, rocket up to 40°C in July or August.

There’s plenty to do, but you’d be mad to visit Jordan and not experience Petra, the UNESCO-listed Nabatean city that dates back to 300 BC. Comprised of towering temples and red cliffs, the archaeological site is often considered one of the world’s greatest wonders.

Then there’s the Wadi Rum desert, where experienced guides can take you on an unforgettable adventure. Not to mention the capital, Amman.

If you are looking to unwind, relax by the pool of a luxury resort located either by the Red Sea in Aqaba, or near the saltwater lake known as the Dead Sea.

Tunisia

Temperature: 24°C (Up to 29°C)
Sunshine hours: 12 hours
Flight time: Three hours, 30 minutes

For a unique beach break in the June sun, why not consider Tunisia? Its sprawling capital offers a fascinating mix of culture and beautiful beaches.

Just an hour away from Tunis, you’ll find Hammamet, a popular coastal destination with white sands and warm waters — perfect for sunbathing and snorkelling. A bit further south there is Sousse, another stunning beach town with a rich history and vibrant medina.

And this break won’t break the bank. Hammamet and Sousse have been ranked as two of the cheapest destinations for an all-inclusive holiday in 2025

Alternatively, visit the ancient ruins of Carthage, where you can wander through archaeological sites and learn about the country’s fascinating past.

Back in the capital, don’t miss the Bardo Museum, home to incredible collections showcasing Tunisia’s heritage, or take a stroll through Medina, a UNESCO World Heritage site with over 700 monuments to discover.

However, make sure to check the government’s website for the latest advice before booking. The Foreign Office currently advises against all travel to Western Tunisia, including the Tunisia-Algeria border, and Southern Tunisia, including the Tunisia-Libya border.

Temperature: 30°C to 32°C (Aruba)
Sunshine hours:
Flight time: 15 hours, 55 minutes (Aruba) or 12 hours, 25 minutes (Curaçao)

Let’s be clear: the ABC islands are not at their hottest in June.

Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao typically excel weather-wise from December to mid-April, which is peak season, but are warm all year round. June falls comfortably in shoulder season.

They’re in the Caribbean Sea, just off the coast of Venezuela – but are technically part of The Netherlands. You might even hear them called the ‘Netherlands Antilles’ sometimes.

But each island has its unique point of interest, as well as plenty of resort-type hotels for sun-seeking visitors.

Aruba is a dream come true for someone hoping to set eyes on a crisp white-sand beach, while Bonaire is a world-class scuba diving hotspot – and Curaçao has the UNESCO-listed capital of Willemstad, famous for its brightly-coloured Handelskade.

Mauritius is famous for its breathtaking beaches, and you’ll find some of the best along the island’s coastline. Trou aux Biches and Belle Mare offer powdery white sand and turquoise waters, while Le Morne is a favourite for kitesurfing, set against the dramatic backdrop of Le Morne Brabant Mountain.

Beyond the beaches, there’s plenty to discover. Take a boat trip to Île aux Cerfs, an idyllic island with crystal-clear lagoons, or explore the lush interior of Black River Gorges National Park, where hiking trails lead to waterfalls, panoramic viewpoints, and rare wildlife.

For a touch of culture, visit Port Louis, the island’s capital, where you can browse the lively Central Market, explore the Blue Penny Museum, or try delicious street food like dholl puri.

Whether you’re looking for relaxation or adventure, Mauritius has a perfect balance of both making it a destination that is worth the long-haul flight.

The Kenyan capital offers pleasantly balmy temperatures in June, as well as plenty to keep tourists busy — whether you prefer cultural sights or topping up your tan.

Animal lovers should visit the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust to see rescued baby elephants or the Giraffe Centre, where you can get up close to endangered Rothschild giraffes. Just outside the city, Nairobi National Park is a must — where else can you spot lions and rhinos with a city skyline in the background?

If you’re craving beach time, head to Kenya’s stunning coastline. Diani Beach, with its powdery white sands and turquoise waters, is a tropical paradise, while Nyali Beach in Mombasa offers a laid-back vibe with plenty of beachside cafés and water sports.

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

No trip to Rio is complete without a visit to Christ the Redeemer, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, standing tall atop Corcovado Mountain.

And for a taste of local culture, take a stroll through the colorful streets of Santa Teresa, known for its bohemian vibe, colonial mansions, and vibrant street art.

When it’s time to unwind, the world-famous beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema offer golden sands, rolling waves, and a lively atmosphere.

If you’re after something more serene, Prainha Beach is a hidden gem just outside the city, surrounded by green hills and perfect for surfing or relaxing.

South Korea

Temperature: 27°C
Sunshine hours: 14 hours
Flight time: 12 hours 35 minutes

June is a fantastic time to visit South Korea, and you should start with its buzzing capital, Seoul — a city where ancient palaces, Buddhist temples, and neon-lit skyscrapers all collide.

You can’t miss Changdeokgung Palace, the main royal residence for over 200 years. While you’re there, wander through Bukchon Hanok Village’s traditional houses and stop by Jogyesa Temple for a peaceful moment.

For the best city views, head up to iconicN Seoul Tower on Namsan Mountain.

And make sure you save some time for Myeongdong’s street food and shopping, grab a coffee in one of Hongdae’s quirky cafés, or stroll along the scenic Cheonggyecheon Stream.

If you’re up for an adventure, take a day trip to the DMZ or go hiking in Bukhansan National Park.
