This travel item is often worn all the time but holidaymakers tend to avoid chucking in the laundry.

An Instagram user made the horrifying discovery that your cross body bags will indeed pick up as much dirt as the rest of your clothes.

In a shocked clip, a traveller that goes by the username shireenaroundtheworld posted a video giving her bag a well deserved scrub.

The caption stated: “Honestly I knew it wouldn’t be great but I didn’t realise quite how bad it would be.

“I can’t even imagine the amount of bits from different countries that were being carried around on that.

“Moral of the story, wash your travel gear kids.”

The humble bum bag is used most days and taken out in all sorts of environments but often gets left out when getting your gear squeaky clean.

The clip depicts digital nomad Shireen washing her bum bag in a sink with the water quickly turning a murky brown.

It then shows her pointing at the sink looking utterly disgusted with the amount of grime it had picked up.

Shireen said this was the first time she had washed the Uniqlo bum bag in 18 months after travelling more than 15 countries.

Instagram users were equally repulsed by the traveller’s discovery and took to the comments to share their thoughts.

One user commented: “Thanks for reminding me that I need to wash mine.”

Another joked: “You’ve got the entire UN security council on that bag.”

A third user added: “This was my sign, hopefully it dries by Wednesday.”

Whether it’s around your waist, across you body, or slung over one shoulder, this bit of kit can come in contact with all sorts of muck.

If it’s flung onto a stinky hostel bed, tied to a grubby suitcase or fallen onto the floor, it will bring all of those germs right next to you once you put it back on.

All these bits of gunk can track inside your bum bag too as you’ll pop passports, cash, keys, maps and trinkets in your handy pack.

As it holds your valuables, bum bags tend to stick by your side – despite never getting a wash.

Patterned and dark-coloured pieces of kit can hide dirt really well so sometimes it’s tricky to see when things are really getting filthy.

Shireen recommends giving your gear a good wash so you don’t have to go through the same gross ordeal she had to.

Chucking it in the washing machine might damage it but if you fill up the sink with warm water and tackle it with some gentle soap it’ll get the clean it deserves.

If you check the label there may even be washing instructions.

How To Pick The Best Travelling Outfit

The Sun’s Deputy Fashion Editor has broken down essential travel attire to get from A to B in style.

Abby McHale says: “When it comes to deciding on what to wear to the airport several factors need to be taken into consideration.

“What the weather is like in the countries you’re travelling from and to, how long your flight is (as comfort is key) and how much luggage you are bringing with you.

“If you’re going from one climate to another then you’ll want to make sure you have layers, plus this may be your only option if you don’t have lots of space in your luggage.

“A light jacket over a T-shirt with a thin scarf or jumper in your bag in case the plane is cold would work.

“Also don’t forget your sunglasses, although the hot burst of air is lovely as you step off the plane, you’ll need your sunnies in your handbag.

“Bottoms-wise – go for something loose and comfortable, there are so many lovely pairs of wide-leg elasticated trousers around at the moment, look for fabrics such as linen that are nice and light for a stylish yet comfy look.

“Finishing off with accessories, trainers are the most practical option, however, flat sandals can also look lovely (just pop a pair of socks in your handbag for the plane), and a high cross-body bag is perfect for keeping all your important documents near to you.”
