Wimbledon rage over 'dodgy' Newcastle penalty after Carabao Cup defeat

Eddie Howe was told that Newcastle’s progression to the Carabao Cup fourth round only came as a result of a “dodgy penalty”.

Fuming Dons manager Johnnie Jackson vented his frustration after Newcastle clinched a spot-kick, with Joe Piggott deemed to have fouled Miggy Almiron, leading Fabian Schar to slot home.

The Magpies barely scraped by, having been largely held in check by the League Two side.

Jackson blasted: “We have lost by a dodge penalty. I am fuming with it. First there was a dive (when Schar went down), free-kick, yellow card. Then there was another coming together, ref didn’t give it then the linesman got involved and gave a penalty. I am angry about that one.”

Merely a year has passed since Newcastle dazzled with a 4-1 demolition of Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League, marking their finest feat under Eddie Howe’s leadership.

Yet, no such sparkle or vim was on display this time. Instead, precisely 363 days after that illustrious evening, Newcastle eked out a workmanlike triumph.

A stern challenge awaits them in the shape of Chelsea in their upcoming Carabao Cup clash. A significant step up in quality will be imperative for further progress.

Wimbledon, nestled at 11th in League Two, produced an admirable performance. With a well-executed gameplan focusing on defensive solidity and constricting space, they managed to stifle Newcastle as Howe’s squad struggled for creative breakthroughs.

Despite the introduction of the Toon heavyweights, including Anthony Gordon and Bruno Guimaraes, Newcastle couldn’t translate dominance into a convincing scoreline during the latter half.

Jackson added: “It was a brilliant effort from our players. The way we did our game plan Newcastle and they know they have been in a game.

“The gulf in divisions and individual qualities is obvious but we bridged it and frustrated them. I am disappointed we did not force it to pens. I think we are a really good team, They are in there gutted we did not pull it off.”

League Two Wimbledon also had their opportunity to play at St James’ Park after the match was postponed and relocated due to a flood that damaged their pitch last week.

Howe commented: “Job done, through to the next round. These are difficult games but I was frustrated with our attacking play. We were not dynamic enough. Credit to them for their defending.”

“The one on Miggy looked like he was caught. It is instantly forgettable. It won’t live long in the memory. It is wins like this that create a cup run. You have to battle your way through.”
