Westworld Season 4 Episode 5 recap: Charlotte and William prepare their 'perfect world'


Charlotte Hale (Tessa Thompson) and the clone of William a.k.a. The Man in Black (Ed Harris) prepare their ‘perfect world’ in the new episode of HBO‘s Westworld.

The new episode airing on Sunday night, entitled Zhuanzgi (the name of a Chinese philosopher) featured Charlotte and William flaunting their power over this world.

Standing in their way, however, is Bernard (Jeffrey Wright) and Ashley (Luke Hemsworth).

The episode begins with William having a dinner at a fancy restaurant, with two people who thinks they are close friends with him.

When he asks what his name is, the man just laughs, as William says he can do anything he wants to anyone in this restaurant.

He says they represent, ‘a very significant investment’ and that they will not remember anything and they have no control.

Her roommate Maya (Ariana Debose) says she’s glad her date went well and she deserves it, as Christine walks to work.

She gets to work and brings up the characters she has in progress, before starting a new narrative.

Charlotte is seen controlling a number of people who start dancing in the street at her command.

She destroys a man’s ice sculpture and tells him to start again, telling the man at the keyboard she wants music with more ‘pep.’

William says the humans made the robots in their own image but she says they can rewrite themselves, though they haven’t yet.

They talk about a man who had breached, with Hope get sent for him as the man says he’s glad it wasn’t all in his head.

William asks if something is wrong with her system and she says there’s not, but adds there have been 38 incidents, all triggered by contact with outliers.

She looks again and they look the same, but he tells her to wait, and the people are seen talking to each other.

Christina says it’s a fluke and he asks her to change it again and one of the women leaves, which terrifies Christina.

The episode transitions back to Ashley and Jay’s team hunting down the outlier, as William is seen walking near them as well.

Ashley says something is wrong and everyone just freezes around them… before they all turn to the group.

They agree to split up to try and get to the outlier as people start attacking them.

Jay gets inside the apartment as the outlier is seen on the roof, approached by William, brandishing a gun.

‘You see it too, don’t you?’ the outlier says, looking at the tower, adding her husband could see it too.

‘This world doesn’t make sense. Nothing makes sense. You feel it too. I can see it in your eyes. You think you’re going crazy but you’re not, you’re not alone,’ she says.

William is about to shoot her when Jay shoots him and flees with the outlier as the team all disperses and head to a waiting boat.

Back on the roof, William gets up.

The episode cuts back to Teddy and Christina, who wonders who they really are.

The episode cuts back to William,  who says there’s a beauty to this world, an order, a grand design.

‘It was a dream for so long and we finally made it real,’ he adds as he visits the human William, what’s left of him.

The real William asks why he’d ask him and not Charlotte, as host William asks what he is.

Host William says he had contact with an outlier  and asks if it’s infecting him because there is a virus in humans that makes hosts kill themselves.

William says its not his world, it’s hers, and real William says, ‘Maybe it’s  time you questioned the nature of your reality.’

The episode cuts back to Christina’s apartment, where Teddy is waiting for her, as she says he was right.

He asks if she sees it, and she looks at the massive tower and nods as Christina asks if she’s writing everyone?

She asks who did this to you and Teddy says, ‘You did as the episode comes to an end.

The preview for next week’s episode shows Maeve being fixed up by Bernard and says she wants to know what’s happening.

Charlotte says humans are petty and exhausting and she wants to put an end to this.

Zhuangzi represents the start of the back half of the eight-episode fourth season of Westworld. 

HBO has yet to renew Westworld for a fifth season at this time, though it’s unclear what the network’s plans may be.

Season 4 continues with Fidelity on Sunday, July 31, Metanoia on Sunday, August 7 and the season finale, Que Sera, Sera on Sunday, August 14 on HBO.
