On Sunday night, Cheryl celebrated her birthday with her bandmates on stage at Liverpool’s M&S Bank Arena, and seized the opportunity to reflect on a comment she made 20 years ago during an interview.

Speaking on Off The Record, an E4 documentary that aired in 2006, Cheryl is seen pulling a face when asked if she saw the band still together in the future.

She then responded: “Can you imagine a 30-year-old singing ‘I’m just a love machine?’ Nah. No thanks.”

But on stage this weekend, Cheryl was forced to eat her words and spoke about the moment online – but noted she technically kept to her word.

“I’d just like to clear a little something up, you might have seen a video floating around of me saying I would never sing Love Machine in my 30s,” she told the screaming fans.

“Ok, but if we are going to go there, last tour I was 29… today I am 41!”

The band then kicked in to the classic pop bop, much to the delight of fans.

Despite the comment made by Cheryl, Girls Aloud are continuing to be fan favourites as they continue their tour around the UK.

Even Nicola saw the funny side, playfully jabbing at her bandmate on Instagram in response to a fan comment.

Sharing a video of the tour, one fan wrote: “’I did not expect to be back in my fangirl life at 31 years old…but I am SO here for it”

This prompted Nicola to say, “I don’t think Chez expected to be singing love machine past 30 but she’s so here for it!”

Despite the girls struggling at times to sell out venues, fans have still been packed out to celebrate the group regardless.

Girls Aloud’s tour thrilled fans when it was first announced in November, with the group notably paying tribute to their late bandmate Sarah Harding throughout the performance.

Sarah died in 2021 after a battle with cancer, meaning she never got to reunite with her bandmates.

At one point during the show, the girls incorporated Sarah’s vocals to their hit cover of I’ll Stand By You, as a moment of remembrance for her.
