It will be set years after the original novel
The title and plotline of the book sequel to Call Me By Your Name have been confirmed.
The original novel was published in 2007 and was written by André Aciman. In 2017, it was adapted into the critically acclaimed movie of the same name, starring Timothée Chalamet and Armie Hammer.
Aciman has now confirmed details of the follow-up in an announcement from publishers Farrar, Straus, and Giroux. The new book will be called Find Me and will be set years after Call Me By Your Name.
According to the announcement: “In Find Me, Aciman shows us Elio’s father Samuel, now divorced, on a trip from Florence to Rome to visit Elio, who has become a gifted classical pianist. A chance encounter on the train leads to a relationship that changes Sami’s life definitively. Elio soon moves to Paris where he too has a consequential affair, while Oliver, now a professor in northern New England with sons who are nearly grown, suddenly finds himself contemplating a return visit to Europe.”
In a statement given to Vulture, Aciman said: “The world of Call Me by Your Name never left me. Though I created the characters and was the author of their lives, what I never expected was that they’d end up teaching me things about intimacy and about love that I didn’t quite think I knew until I’d put them down on paper. The film made me realise that I wanted to be back with them and watch them over the years — which is why I wrote Find Me.”
Find Me will be published on October 29, 2019.
A film sequel has been much discussed but earlier this week (March 19), Hammer (who played Oliver) told Vulture making a second movie might be “setting ourselves up for disappointment”.
“I’m sort of coming around to the idea that the first one was so special for everyone who made it, and so many people who watched it felt like it really touched them, or spoke to them,” he said. “I don’t know that anything will match up to the first, you know?”
Last year, director Luca Guadagnino said he had been working with Aciman on the plot for a second film. “It’s gonna be a new movie, a different tone,” he said. “You’re gonna see a lot of the East Coast of America… They’re gonna go around the world.”
