After a dramatic finale to season three, The White Lotus creator Mike White has said he would “love” to do an all-star season.
The eighth and final episode of the current season aired on HBO on Sunday (April 7), with fans left “stunned” and “devastated” by its fatal conclusion – see here for an analysis of the season finale and here for fan reactions.
Each season of the show is set within a different branch of the titular luxury hotel and spa chain, with each set of episodes following a different but equally obnoxious cast of millionaire hotel guests.
Very few characters have appeared across multiple seasons – Jennifer Coolidge’s Tanya McQuoid and Natasha Rothwell’s Belinda Lindsey being notable exceptions – but now series creator Mike White has suggested that some old familiar faces could still return.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter ahead of the season finale, Patrick Schwarzenegger, who plays Saxon Ratliff, mentioned: “I’ve heard rumours of them doing an all-star season.”
Intriguingly, White himself responded to Schwarzenegger’s comments by saying: “I’d love to do that.”
White writes and directs every episode of the show alone, so exerts singular artistic control over its future direction, so if he is sincere in his desire, the tantalising prospect could yet come true.
It is a given that with its runaway success, The White Lotus will be back for a fourth season, with one of the key talking points being where it will be located. After Hawaii, Sicily and Thailand, Deadline has reported that it has been mentioned by HBO executives that Europe is a likely destination. White has been very vocal about his dislike for the cold and his desire to hit every continent with the show, so Australia or Morocco have also been mooted as possible destinations.
What is for sure is that Emmy-winning composer Cristóbal Tapia de Veer won’t be along for the ride. The man behind one of the most unlikely floor-fillers has stepped away from the show, citing his frequent “hysterical” battles with producers over the music for the show.
