The best upcoming games of 2019

2018 was a great year for games, and it seems like 2019 will be no different. The likes of Red Dead Redemption 2 and Black Ops 4 have already blown us away over the last few months, and we’ve still got the likes of Days Gone, Rage 2, and Doom Eternal on the horizon – to name just a few.

It’s exhausting trying to keep up with all the new releases on the way, so we’ve decided to do the hard work for you and round up all of the biggest and best games on the way this year, next year, and even a few that might be further off than that. We’ve done our best to include games from across all the main consoles and PC, listed in release date order.

If you’d rather find out about great games that are already actually out, your best bet is to check out our individual guides to the best games on the PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Switch.

March 2019

The Division 2

Platforms: PS4, Xbox One, PC
Release date: 15 March 2019
Pre-order: Amazon UK or Amazon US

The Division 2 – or Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 if you want to be fussy – is the return of Ubisoft’s politically tinged Destiny rival. Set in a near future dystopian US, this sequel moves the action from New York to Washington DC, while adding in deeper tactical options, class-style specialisations, and probably a whole load of new drab brown clothing options.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

Platforms: PS4, Xbox One, PC
Release date: 22 March 2019
Pre-order: Amazon UK or Amazon US

Though it’s not a new addition to the Bloodborne or Dark Souls series, there are traces of signature FromSoftware gameplay present in the trailers we’ve seen since its reveal at E3 2018. It’s set to be a Samurai game with hints of Japanese mythology, elements of stealth and a lot of gore. It’s not Ghosts of Tsushima, but at least Xbox One and PC gamers can enjoy this title!

April 2019

Days Gone

Platforms: PS4
Release date: 26 April 2019
Pre-order:  Amazon UK or Amazon US

2019’s first big PS4 exclusive, Days Gone is another post-apocalyptic survival game, in which you’ll have to navigate a world overrun with zombie-like infected, as well as humans who could prove just as deadly. Expect it to be grim ‘n’ gritty throughout, which all sounds pretty familiar, but there is one novel twist: a mechanic that allows you to lead hordes of zombies into enemy camps, to pit your enemies against each other.

Check out everything we know about Days Gone.

May 2019

Rage 2

Platforms: PS4, Xbox One, PC
Release date: 14 May 2019
Pre-order: Amazon UK or Amazon US

It’s the sequel that basically no-one was asking for, but Rage 2 actually looks sort of great. Bethesda’s upcoming open-world shooter looks gleefully nasty, with over-the-top action, an assortment of mad vehicles, and a neon Mad Max aesthetic. Bethesda has been on a roll recently, so we have very high hopes for this one too.

Here’s everything we know about Rage 2 so far.

Spring 2019

Yoshi’s Crafted World

Platforms: Nintendo Switch
Release date: Spring 2019
Pre-order: Amazon UK or Amazon US

Although Nintendo announced a Yoshi game for the Switch way back in 2017, we didn’t hear any more about it (or even the name of the game) until September 2018. Nintendo confirmed both the name and release window for the upcoming Yoshi game, and treated fans to a short trailer. It looks similar to the previous entry in the Yoshi series, Yoshi’s Woolly World, which was released on Wii U back in 2015, and we expect to find out more about the game in the coming months.

Doom Eternal

Platforms: PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC
Release date: 2019
Pre-order: Amazon UK or Amazon US

Following up from the events of 2016’s Doom, Doom Eternal looks to offer much of the same – and that’s no bad thing. Doom Eternal is the fast-paced, ultra-violent sequel that everyone has been waiting for, and boasts a larger roster of Hellish enemies, more weapons and new mechanics that’ll change the way that you play Doom games forever. Oh, and the introduction of a new game mode that puts online players in your single-player campaign as Demons is coming too. Sounds fun, right?

Here’s all we know about Doom Eternal so far.

The Outer Worlds

Platforms: PS4, Xbox One, PC
Release date: 2019
Pre-order: Not available

Following a handful of teasers, The Outer Worlds was revealed at the Game Awards 2018 – and it looks intriguing. The open-world shooter takes place in a corporate-run colony on the edge of the galaxy, but like with most games, all is not as it seems. You play as a colonist that stumbles on a conspiracy that could destroy the entire colony, and it’s down to you to thwart it. Being an Obsidian game, expect a heavy emphasis on player choice, with your decisions dictating the outcome of the game.

Harry Potter: Wizards Unite

Platforms: iOS & Android
Release date: 2019
Pre-order: Not available

While our list is mainly populated with PS4, Xbox One, Switch and PC games, there is an upcoming mobile app that has everybody excited. Developed by the same team that created Pokemon GO, Harry Potter: Wizards Unite looks to offer something similar – but with a distinctly magical twist. Details are still scarce about what you’ll be doing, but the trailer suggests you’ll collect magical artefacts and meet characters from the HP universe on your real-world travels.

To be announced

Cyberpunk 2077

Platforms: PS4, Xbox One, PC
Release date: TBC
Pre-order: Amazon UK or Amazon US

CD Projekt Red is going big with its follow-up to The Witcher trilogy: a massive open-world, first-person, cyberpunk sci-fi game based on a cult tabletop RPG. Known about for years but only revealed for the first time at E3 2018, Cyberpunk looks like one of the most ambitious RPGs ever made, combining dense progression systems, branching narratives, and fast-paced FPS combat into one sprawling whole. We’re ready to move to Night City now, please.

Death Stranding

Platforms: PS4
Release date: TBC
Pre-order: Amazon US

Despite releasing five trailers for Death Stranding over the past few years, nobody really understands what Hideo Kojima is creating. We do know that it’ll include a host of celebrities including Mads Mikkelsen and Norman Redus, and that it’ll be unlike any game we’ve ever played. There were rumours of a 2019 release, but considering we’ve only seen minimal gameplay, we may see this one drift into 2020 and beyond.
