The beautiful Italian town that is a hidden gem and less than an hour away from Rome

This tiny coastal town is one of the most beautiful parts of Italy and it is becoming an increasingly popular place for tourists.

Sperlonga in Italy is a hidden treasure of the country, located in Lazio.

It is halfway between Rome and Naples and lies in the regional park of the Ulysses Riviera.

Known for its beautiful landscapes, it features sandy beaches, incredible archeological sites and impressive sea views.

The fairytale area brings in tourists from all over the world for its hiking appeal and its rich history.

To get there, the best way is to fly to Rome or Naples and then take a taxi or train to Sperlonga. You can visit these cities too as part of your trip which makes for an even more exciting visit.

One of the most popular attractions in Sperlonga is the Villa of Tiberius – a famous ruins site. It is named after Emperor Tiberius and was part of a villa complex built by the Emperor over an original project inspired by Augustus.

A visitor on Tripadvisor said: “I took a cab from Sperlonga to Tiberius’ villa and grotto. The villa is ruins but a new museum with lots of windows and a lighthouse has wonderful statues, frescoes, and pieces of pottery.

“There are English descriptions to accompany the Italian. The walk to the villa ruins and grotto is well marked. The grotto is amazing.”

If you’re planning on heading to the beach while you’re in the area, there are a range of options.

Fontana Beach is a popular choice – it is not far from the town centre and offers a restaurant with tables right on the sand, which is great for lunch or dinner.

One visitor on Tripadvisor said: “This is a very nice beach, wonderful water, well situated and easy to find. I’d recommended for the family with small children.”
