Stunning UK town between two beautiful national parks with cosy pubs, tea room and bakery

Kirkby Lonsdale is perched on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, and provides a base from which to explore the beautiful Lake District, the stunning Yorkshire Dales and the breathtaking Forest of Bowland.

Its delightful high street appears to have been lifted straight from a storybook, lined with charming independent boutiques, a superb bakery complete with its own tea rooms, and a selection of cosy pubs that beckon after a bracing countryside stroll.

Historical treasures are plentiful, with the 14th-century Devil’s Bridge and Ruskin’s View, which inspired a painting by renowned artist JMW Turner in 1822.

Poet John Ruskin declared in the 19th century: “I do not know in all my country, still less in France or Italy, a place more naturally divine”.

Every Thursday, the town centre market square comes alive with the weekly Charter Market, showcasing the talents of local artists, craftspeople, and producers. Overlooking the bustling square stands The Royal Hotel, a refined Georgian townhouse hotel that’s dog-friendly. With only 14 uniquely designed rooms, the hotel promises a distinctive stay, reports the Liverpool Echo.

Nestled on the other side of the town centre, The Sun Inn marries the allure and charm of a 17th-century inn—complete with oak floors, real fires, and leather seating—with the luxury of a contemporary hotel. Both venues also house their own restaurants, offering guests the option to include dining in their stay.

A favourite among walkers and visitors alike is the Lunesdale Bakery on Main Street. These self-proclaimed ‘proper bakers’ whip up fresh bread, pastries, cakes, and pies daily, even preparing sandwiches for those seeking the perfect packed lunch for a weekend stroll.

A stone’s throw from the bakery is The Milking Parlour, an artisan ice cream shop known for its long queues on balmy summer days. Situated on Jingling Lane, the parlour staff churn out their own artisan ice cream following a traditional Italian gelato recipe. With over 20 delectable flavours on offer—including dairy and gluten-free options—it’s no wonder they’re a hit. They also serve fresh waffles, milkshakes, and hot chocolates daily.

One of Kirkby Lonsdale’s biggest draws for couples seeking a romantic getaway is the abundance of pubs and bars. The Royal Barn boasts 14 handpulls and 8 keg taps, complemented by an extensive selection of wines and spirits, including their own Kirkby Lonsdale gins, rums, and vodka. This cosy venue regularly hosts live music and comedy nights, serving up a menu of delicious pizzas and breakfast dishes.

Just a stone’s throw from the barn’s front door is The Snooty Fox, a laid-back pub boasting a large beer garden and its own accommodation for visitors. Just around the corner, you’ll find The Kings Arms, an atmospheric pub adorned with twinkling fairy lights, offering three cottages for tourists to rent.

Besides the nearby walks featuring Devil’s Bridge and Ruskin’s View, Kirkby Lonsdale is also a short drive away from Ingleton Waterfalls Trail. This enchanting trail, home to six distinct waterfalls, offers a romantic walking route with numerous picturesque spots for a pause and a picnic area along the way.
