Star Wars: Squadrons is the game once known as Project Maverick: a “smaller, more unusual” Star Wars game developed by EA Motive.
Long-rumoured and occasionally leaked as Project Maverick, EA has now confirmed the existence of Squadrons and is giving it a full reveal later today.
When is the Star Wars: Squadrons release date?
Kotaku reported back in November 2019 that the small-scale Star Wars project is planned for release some time in late 2020, and with a reveal set for today, 15 June, that still sounds plausible.
A late 2020 launch would coincide with the release of the next-gen PS5 and Xbox Series X, so this could be a launch title for the new consoles.
How to watch the Star Wars: Squadrons reveal
EA is revealing the game on YouTube, so it couldn’t be simpler to tune in – we’ve embedded it right here. Everything kicks off at 8am PT / 11am ET / 4pm BST / 5pm CET.
While we’re getting an initial reveal today, there could be more info to follow soon, with the company’s EA Play Live stream set for 18 June. This E3 replacement event could include more Squadrons details, and certainly loads on EA’s other big 2020 games, so here’s how to watch EA Play Live.
What platforms will Squadrons be available on?
It’s unusual for EA to release platform-exclusive games, so we expect Squadrons will be available on PS4, Xbox One and PC as well as the next-gen PS5 and Xbox Series X, release date dependent.
Assuming that Squadrons is Project Maverick we know it’ll be multi-platform anyway, as Maverick was once leaked on the PlayStation Store, and the first time we heard it called Squadrons was an accidental leak of the title and artwork on the Microsoft Xbox store.
What should I expect from Star Wars: Squadrons gameplay?
While the Kotaku coverage doesn’t go into much detail about what to expect from Project Maverick, a leaked PlayStation Store listing gave us our first glimpse. The details of Project Maverick were scraped by a bot-driven Twitter account intended to let followers know about new PlayStation titles as soon as they appear on Sony’s digital storefront.
The details are admittedly scarce, but the Imperial Star Destroyer and X-Wings in the artwork hint at a focus on aerial combat. That ties in with Kotaku’s previous coverage of Project Maverick, calling it a “smaller, more unusual project”, and Polygon suggests the artwork could also offer a glimpse of volcanic planet Mustafar, a possible setting for the upcoming title.
Naturally Squadrons fits in with those details perfectly. The name and artwork give away that it’s a game about piloting starfighters, and the tagline – Pilots Wanted – only adds to the impression.
It’s clearly set either during or before the original trilogy, since the ships and pilots give away that they’re members of the Empire and the Rebellion, so don’t expect to see much from the prequels or the more recent Star Wars movie trilogy. Beyond that we don’t know much though, so well have to wait for the live stream to find out more.
