'Spectacular' city in cheapest European country to visit praised as 'walkable' and 'safe'

A new study has revealed the cheapest countries to visit and various European countries met the mark – with one ranking as high as second place.

According to Go.Compare‘s latest report, which analysed 2023 Travelpac data on UK travellers’ spending and duration of stays across more than 30 countries.

India is highlighted as the most economical destination, with travellers spending an average of £62 per night, making it the cheapest among those studied.

This translates to just £878 for a two-week trip, offering a very low-cost vacation once travellers arrive.

However, the high expense of flights to India may make it a less practical option for UK tourists.

The study identified Poland as the most affordable destination in Europe, coming in at second place, with a nightly expenditure of £72.02.

Poland also has several easily accessible destinations that low-cost airlines fly to from most major UK airports, including Krakow and Warsaw.

However, it is the medieval city of Gdansk that boasts glowing reviews for its walkability, something travellers might want to take into account when looking for cheaper travel options.

According to one Tripadvisor reviewer, Gdansk Old Town is a “spectacular” location to visit, as there is “history behind every corner”.

Highlighting its walkability, the reviewer added: “Most streets are pedestrian friendly with cars either banned or restricted.

“When you need a rest there is plenty of restaurants for all kinds of budgets, where you should be able to communicate in English.”

Another posted shared on the travel website: “We were very fortunate to rent an apartment that fronts the Main Street— could literally open our windows and watch the tourists! Also directly across from restaurants!! All easily accessible!

“The daily stroll through the streets was delightful! Even the rain one morning didn’t stop us! So clean and safe!! Lots of unexpected surprises! So much to see and you will not be disappointed!”
