After a nearly three-year delay due to Hollywood strikes, the eagerly anticipated second season of Severance has finally arrived on Apple TV+.
In keeping with the platform’s release format, episodes are being released weekly to keep viewers hooked. The second season premiered on Friday, January 17, 2025, boasting a total of 10 episodes – a longer run than the previous season.
Episodes are released simultaneously worldwide on Apple TV+, although the exact time varies due to geographical differences. For instance, they drop at 12am Eastern Standard Time, 9pm Pacific Time, and 11pm Central Time.
In the UK, this translates to a 5am release.
The second season focuses on the aftermath of the first series’ finale, with a surprising twist revealing Helly R (Britt Lower) is actually Helena Egan, heir to Lumon Industries and daughter of Jame Eagan (Michael Siberry).
Fans are now left wondering whether it was Helena or Helly who returned to the Severed Floor in the season two premiere, and what her motives might be after promising to rectify the problems caused by the Macrodat Uprising, reports the Mirror US.
Dan Erickson, the mastermind behind Severance, delved into the show’s mysteries in an Inside the Episode feature, pondering: “Lumon has to figure out what information has leaked. Did Mark find out about his wife? Did any of them reveal to anybody what they do every day? “
Adam Scott, the series’ lead actor, teased what lies ahead for his character: “For Outie Mark, season two is really about, ‘Okay, now you know that this company has been deceiving you, what are you going to do about it? ‘”.
Ben Stiller, who directed Severance, expressed his excitement over a particular character development: “For [Lower], it was really exciting to explore Helena, and I think what she did was really, really special in that there’s just such a different character there.”
He added: “And the way she expanded on Helly really creates such an interesting contrast.”
Sam Donavan, another director on the project, highlighted the actress’s skill in distinguishing her dual roles: “[Lower] has really embraced that physicality between the two characters. Helly is quite aggressive, while with Helena she is in a position of power where things come to her, so there’s much more of a calmness about her and she’s much steadier.”
The 39 year old actress Lower herself reflected on her character’s complexities: “Helena is someone who has to wear a mask in front of people. Whereas Helly is just, there’s no mask, there’s no filter, and there’s very little care for what people think.”
She elaborated on the impact of portraying both sides, saying, “Helena has a very sheltered existence, so I think the experience of seeing another version of herself that is so much more free than she is, is intriguing, inspiring, provocative.”
