Scientists have discovered a new species of flying geckos in India, and they’re quite the posers.
According to a study published in Nature, animals was found in the northeastern Indian state of Mizoram and named ‘Gekko mizoramensis’.
Researchers found the wide-eyed, smiling reptiles while surveying gecko populations in the region.
Parachute geckos, also known as flying geckos or gliding geckos, are a group of reptiles known for their unique ability to glide through the air.
These animals use flaps of skin on their bodies called patagia to glide through the air between trees. Their unique adaptation allows them to escape predators, reach new foraging spots, and navigate their arboreal habitat.
The geckos are found in Southeast Asia, including Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines. However, the study notes that this is the first time researchers have recorded the new species in India.
Scientists found that the geckos discovered in India are distinct from other parachute geckos, some of which can glide up to 200 feet.
Researchers captured the geckos by hand at heights about 150 to 360 cm above the ground.
The Gekko mizoramensis are nocturnal and use scent simulations to protect themselves as they fly.
According to the study, the reptiles were most active around dusk, hunting and ambushing their prey, including beetles, roaches, moths, and other insects.
These nocturnal geckos showcase remarkable camouflage and are often kept as pets.
