Ryan Reynolds has shared his thoughts on which film star and director could have made a Deadpool movie in the classic age of movies.

Ryan Reynolds seems set to play Deadpool for the foreseeable future, but in a recent interview the actor revealed which classic movie star he believes would have been perfect for the role of the Merc With a Mouth. As fans prepare for the final stretch before Deadpool & Wolverine bursts onto cinema screens, both Reynolds and co-star Hugh Jackman has have been taking part in various press interviews to build the hype. While speaking to Turner Classic Movies, Reynolds was asked his thoughts on who could have played Deadpool if the character had been around in a vintage age of film.

It is almost impossible to imagine what audiences in the ‘40s and ‘50s would have made of Deadpool – although it would certainly have been something to see – but for Reynolds, there is one particular actor who he believes would have had the credentials to deliver the “silver tongue” dialogue of the character. He said:

“I am in no way comparing myself to him. But I would think Cary Grant had a bit of a silver tongue. I think Howard Hawks could direct it because the rapid-fire dialogue that he was so gifted at putting on the screen would suit him perfectly.”

For those who aren’t familiar with the name of Howard Hawks, he was the director behind Cary Grant movies such as His Girl Friday and Bringing Up Baby, the 1932 gangster movie Scarface, as well as Humphrey Bogart movies like The Big Sleep and To Have and Have Not. With a combination of tough drama and screwball comedy, it is not hard to see why Reynolds believes Hawks would have been a good fit for the franchise.

Deadpool & Wolverine is Still Spoiling Its Cameos

With only a week until Deadpool & Wolverine arrives in cinemas, spilling its secrets and, according to Kevin Feige, leaving a big impact on the MCU’s future, the latest trailer for the movie continues to seemingly overshare some of the cameos that litter the film. As well as delivering new looks at several returning X-Men villains, new antagonist Cassandra Nova, and a full-length look at Lady Deadpool, the biggest reveal of the final trailer was the return of Dafne Keen as X-23.

The actress played a pivotal role in Hugh Jackman’s last appearance as Wolverine in the 2017 movie Logan. While it seemed for a long time that neither character would be returning to screens, the Marvel multiverse has made it a clear case of all bets being off when it comes to the return of any former stars of older Marvel franchises.

Deadpool & Wolverine should be the most surprising MCU adventure since Avengers: Endgame.

While the appearance of the character came as a surprise – one that would have been even bigger if it had been seen first in cinemas – it seems that there are many more cameos still to be revealed. The fact that Marvel Studios is happy to give away what seems like a big deal cameo just ahead of the film’s release ushers in the question of how big the cameos they are not revealing are going to be. One thing for certain is that fan reactions to those cameos will be a big factor in the reviews and success of the movie.

Deadpool & Wolverine
will be released on July 26.
