Remove limescale stains from toilets in 10 minutes with ‘magic’ household staple

Cleaning the toilet can be one of the most dreaded chores in the home as it can be incredibly difficult to remove stains and limescale if you are not using the right products,

Limescale can be tricky to clean as it is mainly made up of a compound called calcium carbonate, which clings to surfaces and is resistant to most cleaning products.

Luckily, Nathaniel Jamesson, an expert from the cleaning service Get It Cleaned, has shared there is one simple kitchen item that can break down toilet imescale without having to scrub at it for ages.

She said: “One of the most cost-effective and efficient cleaning products that will help you get rid of limescale in your toilet is lemon juice.”

It may seem strange but lemon juice can naturally dissolve the calcium carbonate in limescale due to how acidic it is as is also slightly abrasive it will be easy to remove without scrubbing.

How to clean limescale from a toilet with lemon juice

All you need to do is pour lemon juice down the toilet bowl and then leave it without flushing for at least 10 minutes but may need longer depending on how much limescale there is.

Once the time is up, gently wipe the toilet bowl with a sponge on your toilet brush to remove the now-dissolved limescale.

The residue should come away easily, then all you have to do is flush the toilet and it should be sparkling clean once more.

Nathaniel said: “In addition to being fairly cheap and efficient, lemon juice is a natural product that will not pose the health risks of the harsh chemicals some dedicated limescale cleaners use.”

What else can you use to get rid of limescale?

If the limescale is partially stubborn or you do not have any lemon juice then another way to clean your toilet is with cola, which may be strange but it is highly effective.

Nathaniel said: “Some find it surprising that its cleaning qualities are not just a myth. In reality, cola is one of the most effective and budget-friendly solutions for removing limescale from your toilet.

“Just open the bottle of cola and guide it around the toilet bowl’s rim. Let the cola sit and work its magic as a powerful limescale remover.”

Cola is acidic and fizzy which both help to loosen up the limescale. Once you flush the toilet most of it should come away without having to scrub at it.

Your toilet should be limescale-free without too much effort or time using only natural items you likely already had in your kitchen.
