Take a deep breath… it’s useful to know that boredom is not apathy. If you are feeling restless, it is going to hamper good decision making as you’re looking for a quick fix. Before you do anything, say to yourself that the boredom will not kill you.
When you are not bored, list several options for things to do when you are bored. This could be playing the guitar, for example. Have these things on hand, if possible, and go to the list before you can ruminate.
Try to reframe why you are doing a task: think about doing your taxes as not about you but make it about contributing to society, perhaps. Or make something a game – try to make a ‘have to’ task a challenge to do well, or do quickly.
Allow yourself to have downtime where you consider what your life goals are and whether you are ever getting to the ‘want to’ tasks.
