Fans of Squid Game and Pretty Little Liars should not miss Prime Video’s latest police drama, On Call, which made its debut on the streaming service on January 9.
The eight-part series, an original creation by Dick Wolf, has been creating a buzz since its premiere. The star-studded cast includes Troian Bellisario from Pretty Little Liars, Rich Ting of Squid Game fame, Brandon Larracuente from 13 Reasons Why, Lori Loughlin of 90210, and Eriq La Salle from Logan.
Troian portrays Traci Harmon, who along with her novice partner Alex Diaz (played by Brandon), responds to emergency calls in Long Beach, California, while grappling with the loss of a colleague.
This marks Dick’s first venture into half-hour format series, with each episode clocking in at 24 minutes. The renowned film and television producer is known for his work on the Law and Order and Chicago franchises.
The series was initially announced in May 2021 by IMDb TV, now rebranded as Amazon Freevee, marking Dick’s first foray into streaming after a successful television career, reports the Mirror US.
However, production was temporarily halted in May 2023 due to picketing during the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike.
Within a week of its release, On Call emerged as the most-watched show on Prime Video in the United States. It boasts a 7.6 rating out of 10 on IMDb, based on 5.4 thousand reviews, just 13 days post-release.
Fans are heaping accolades on the series, with one viewer stating: “The show, praised for its inventive use of simulated body-worn cameras, brings an immersive and unfiltered perspective to police work.”
Another was left thoroughly impressed, saying: “At the end of each episode I felt as if I’d worked a 12 hour shift.”
The reviewer lauded the creators for authentically depicting the tumultuous, emotionally taxing, and often underappreciated essence of law enforcement, from critical incidents to the frustrations of being outmanned and constrained by rules.
An additional comment came from someone who declared: “One of the best police drama TV shows out here. Great cop show like it’s quite intense and really realistic especially it shows the perspective of a police officer on duty and what they go through their shift.”
Meanwhile, another fan contributed: “On Call is an engaging and emotionally stimulating series that captures the unpredictable and high-stakes lives of first responders.”
