PHILIP Hammond is backing his deputy Liz Truss to replace him as Chancellor – because she’s mean.
He said tight-fisted people usually make a good job of controlling the nation’s purse strings.
And he revealed: “Liz is even meaner than me. She won’t let people spend money irresponsibly.
“She’s really tough. I think she’d make a wonderful Chancellor.”
Remainer Mr Hammond – dubbed Victor Meldrew by MPs for his misery-laden warnings about Brexit – is expected to get the push when Boris Johnson becomes PM.
Last week he showed his mean credentials by rejecting Theresa May’s demands for an extra £27billion school funding – saying she “might get 27p”.
Home Secretary Sajid Javid is tipped to replace him at the Treasury but Chief Secretary Ms Truss is also in strong contention.
Asked who would do a good job, Mr Hammond said: “The question people should ask the leadership candidates is how mean they are with money.
“Ask my wife and she’ll tell you I’m really mean with money. I don’t just spend it.
“Liz is extremely mean. She’d do a good job here.”
