The Outnumbered children have recalled their shock at discovering their on-screen parents Hugh Dennis and Claire Skinner were dating in real life.

Outnumbered was a family comedy which aired on BBC from 2007 to 2016 – before announcing its 2024 return for a Christmas special.

After the programme initially wrapped, Hugh, 62, and Claire, 59, shocked their ‘children’ Tyger-Drew Honey, Daniel Roche, and Ramona Marquez by revealing they had fallen for one another in real life.

And on Thursday Tyger, 28, David, 24, and Ramona, 23, told The Sun of the surreal moment that they found out.

Daniel said: It was great news, to be honest. We’ve known both of them for a long time.

‘You can imagine, we’re on a set with three kids and for a lot of the time, they’re the only two adult actors. We had separate green rooms. They get on so well, the chemistry’s so real. So happy for them.’

Ramona added: ‘My mum said: “Can’t they adopt you and now you can make a real-life Outnumbered family?”‘

Hugh and Claire portrayed Peter and Sue Brockman while Tyger portrayed eldest son Jake, Daniel, middle son Ben, and Ramona only daughter and youngest child Karen.

On Wednesday, the young actors delighted fans by appearing onstage at the 29th annual National Television Awards.

Though not honoured with a gong themselves, the actors were delighted to give Mrs Brown’s Boys the Comedy award.

Three-time NTA nominee Outnumbered announced its return in May of this year.

The BBC revealed that a Christmas special will be shown in December, marking the first episode of the series in eight years.

Outnumbered featured a host of special guest during its run including Game Of Thrones’ Jacob Anderson, Harry Shearer, and Daisy Edgar-Jones.

Its 2012 special earnt over nine million viewers and its final series over six, compared to just under two-and-a-half viewers for series one.

While Hugh and Claire were given scripts to memorise, the then-children were given general plot points and left to improvise.

Outnumbered has won the Royal Television Society Award for Scripted Comedy as well as three British Comedy Awards and four BAFTA TV Award nominations.
