More leaked images from China may have corroborated previous claims about the Nintendo Switch 2’s size.
It’s looking increasingly likely that Nintendo won’t be unveiling the Nintendo Switch 2 until 2025, which is only making fans more desperate for any info they can get hold of.
Just yesterday, purported video footage of the console’s new Joy-Cons popped up online, which are believed to be magnetic and seem to sport a new trigger on their backs.
Now, further images have been shared, not of the console itself but of accessories including a carry case and screen protectors, which may confirm details about the Switch 2’s size.
The images in question originate from a Chinese e-commerce site called Alibaba, which is reportedly already selling Switch 2 accessories.
Pictures for the carry case even feature a Switch 2 logo, but it’s unlikely to be official since it looks like a simple edit of the current Switch logo with the number two added on.
Trying to view the images on the Alibaba website is kind of a nightmare, but users on the Famiboards forums have collated them for easier perusal.
The carry case is nothing special, but it’s shape very much resembles that of the original Switch, further suggesting the Switch 2 will have more or less the same design.
The case’s measurements of 290mm (length) x 135mm (width) x 45mm (thickness), which also lines up with a previous rumour.
Images of an alleged Switch 2 prototype quoted measurements of 270mm (length) x 115mm (width) x 14 mm (thickness), pointing to the new model being slightly thicker than the current Switch.
As for the screen protector, the images compare it to a protector for the current Switch, and it is significantly larger. This also lends credence to the claim that the Switch 2’s screen is eight inches compared to the original Switch’s 6.2-inch screen.
While it’s unusual for Nintendo not to radically change the design of a console successor, it would make sense for the company to play things safe for the Switch 2.
The Switch has been a tremendous success thanks in part to its dual purpose as a home console and handheld. Nintendo reinventing the wheel would risk alienating the audience it’s built over the years (especially more casual Switch owners) and potentially invite another Wii U situation, that confuses people as to what the Switch 2 actually is.
So far, the only details Nintendo has formally confirmed is that the Switch 2 will retain the company’s online service and feature backwards compatibility.
While we wouldn’t completely rule out the Switch 2 being teased at The Game Awards next week, it’s far more likely Nintendo will not say anything until its own dedicated showcase next year.
Either that or it posts an announcement video on a random Thursday this month, you can never tell with Nintendo.
