Almost 1,500 issues were reported with Nationwide’s services shortly after 5pm today, according to website Downdetector.

Of these complaints, 58 per cent were related to mobile banking, while 39 per cent focused on failures with the building society’s online banking.

4 per cent of issues were also recorded in relation to credit card usage.

One user on X raged: “Once again Nationwide down with bank transfers got direct debits due tomorrow and need to transfer money.”

Another fumed: “Nationwide gone down and it won’t even let you pay for anything… how on earth do you expect us to buy food”.

A third tagged the building society, saying: “How long roughly will Nationwide be down for again today?

“This is becoming a regular thing”.

Others have also complained saying they will be unable to make essential payments today and fear the costs of not completing these transactions.

One asked the building society: “So [I’m] paid tomorrow and have a short window to pay into government childcare and then pay nursery.

“System’s down.

“If I’m fined late payment will Nationwide cover?”

Another added: “Nationwide down again.

“I got bills to pay.

“What’s going on?”

A Nationwide spokesperson said: “Customers are now able to make and receive payments via the Banking App, use their cards to make purchases and withdraw cash from ATMs.

“Some customers may experience intermittent access to accounts via non-Nationwide Open Banking apps and websites.

“We are sorry for any inconvenience caused.”

This comes just days after the building society, Britain’s biggest, announced a big change to many of its branches’ opening hours.

Nationwide said it would be revising the opening times at 12 high street branches from April 14.

As a result, the days your local branch is typically closed will be moved to different points in the week.

For example, the Nationwide branch in Bangor, Wales, will adjust its midweek closing day from Wednesday to Friday.

As a result, starting from 14 April, the branch will operate from 9am to 4.30pm, Monday through Friday, instead of its current schedule of Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday.

The building society’s branch in Reigate, Surrey, will switch its midweek closing days from Wednesday and Thursday to Monday and Wednesday.

This means the site will operate from 9am to 4.30pm, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, instead of its current schedule of Monday, Tuesday, Tuesday, and Friday.

Meanwhile, Nationwide in Kendall, will adjust its midweek closing days from Wednesday and Friday to Monday and Friday.

As a result, the branch will operate from 9am to 4.30pm, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, instead of its current schedule of Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.

A Nationwide spokesperson told The Sun: “We remain committed to our branch promise that everywhere we have a branch we will remain until at least the start of 2028.
