A baffled renter has claimed their neighbours want them to pay for a front door they broke.
The tenant took to Reddit to seek advice about what they should do after their neighbours broke their front door and asked the tenant to pay for repairs.
They took to the social media site for advice as they said they weren’t sure how to deal with the situation.
The incident is said to have occurred when their neighbours attempted to move a ladder and it went calamitously wrong.
They explained: “One of our windows overlooks the neighbour’s garden. For some reason they had a ladder there propping up against our window.
“I could see something there through the glass (like stained or blurred glass) but wasn’t sure what it was.
“I pushed open our window and it hit their ladder and fell back and smashed one of their doors.”
They added that their neighbours are now trying to claim they had a right to store a ladder in the tenants’ garden and they should foot the cost for the damage.
Some claimed the tenant should get legal advice, but others disagreed and claimed that just talking to the neighbours could solve the issue.
One user wrote: “Legal counsel is not required. Inform them to quit being obnoxious and store their ladder correctly the next time.”
Another commented: “The response is to politely tell them that they can store their ladder wherever they want, but it is their responsibility to ensure it is stored safely and damage stemming from inappropriate storage is their issue.”
A third user added: “So their ladder stored in their garden damaged their property and they think you’re responsible…They will have a hard time glossing over the ways they are responsible.”
