Mums stunned over how much adult children ‘should’ pay to live at home – with one saying the amount is twice her mortgage

THANKS to the high costs of renting or buying a house, many young people are living at home with their parents longer, but while some parents think their kids should stay rent-free, others feel they should contribute to costs.

Mums have been debating how much they could charge their adult children to live with them, based on a “pa-rental” calculator by comparison site Compare the Market.

Users type in their postcode and the calculator on the site works out a monthly price based on estimated local rents, food, gas and electricity costs.

It suggests parents in east London (E1) could charge kids £744 a month to live at home, while those living in Manchester (M1) could charge their offspring £606.

In a chat on parenting site Mumsnet, some parents insisted adult offspring staying at home should pay, while others were happy for their children to live rent-free.

One mum said:  “I wouldn’t charge them rent as long as they were saving (not frittering) and actually keeping their rooms tidy (not slobbish). If they were using it as a doss house, then they’d be moving out.”

Another parent said: “My kids can stay in my house rent free for as long as they need/want to.”

Others felt getting their kids to contribute was fair enough.

One mum said: “I think parents do their adult, working children a disservice not charging them. If I can afford not to charge I still would and save it on their behalf (unless I knew for sure they were putting it aside for a mortgage).”

Many felt the costs were too high

Another added: “I plan to Airbnb the kids’ rooms when they are old enough to move out so if they stay and pay nothing that will be my income gone.”

Those living with their parents also shared their thoughts.

One user said she pays “absolutely nothing but my undying gratitude and love” to live at her parents’ house.

But another said: “I live with my dad and give him £700 a month so I don’t think it’s ridiculous.”

Many people felt the prices based on the calculator were too high.

“I pay less for my own flat,” said one user, while another said the suggested price was “double our mortgage”.

“Twenty years ago, I paid £20 a week and boy did I resent it,” another user added.

“Over half” of parents charge their adult children for living at home according to Compare the Market.
