A MUM who ran out of face masks donned a Buzz Lightyear space helmet to protect her from coronavirus while out shopping to ensure her autistic son could eat chicken nuggets.
Kelly Hogan Painter found herself desperately needing to go to her local grocery store on April 4 to stock up on the chicken treats for her two-year-old son Silas who has severe food sensory issues.
The 35-year-old was determined not to be stopped by the lack of a face mask in the house, but when she reached for the Toy Story memorabilia, her husband didn’t believe she would wear it outside of the house.
Unperturbed, the full-time mum-of-three put it on over her head and made her way to the nearby Harris Teeter store in Stallings, North Carolina, and set off on her mission.
Hilarious footage shows the mum wandering around the supermarket brazenly wearing the toy space helmet complete with the visor down to protect herself from virus droplets.
Ignoring how uncomfortable the helmet was and some fellow customers surreptitiously filming her, Kelly managed to purchase the chicken nuggets for her son.
Kelly said: “Trust me, I do not run around frivolously with this pandemic going on but he was getting chicken nuggets even if my life depended on it!
“Honestly the mask is incredibly uncomfortable since it was made for a child and does not sit right on adult shoulders but less uncomfortable than covid-19, I know.
“Everyone got a kick out of it. A few people asked for pictures and I caught a few others trying to secretly videotape me.
“I would do it over and over again if I had to. I love my family far more than I care about my reputation.
“The CDC had just released the recommendation that if you leave the house then you should [cover your face], so my husband wasn’t going to let me out of the house without one. So I improvised.
“We have all things toy story within arms reach at the house and the helmet was practical and efficient. It has a full face shield so I thought it’s even safer than the typical mask.
“My husband bet me that I wouldn’t do it. He should have known better than that!
“I’ve never been in this position before having to fear leaving your house but yes I never turn down a dare or a bet.”
