Dimitar Berbatov believes Matthijs de Ligt will be speaking to Virgil van Dijk about the prospect of a move to the Premier League.

De Ligt, 19, has established himself as one of Europe’s most promising talents following an incredible 12 months for Ajax and several clubs are preparing to do battle for the central defender ahead of the summer transfer window.

Barcelona are in pole position for De Ligt and Manchester United, Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool and PSG have also expressed an interest in the Netherlands international.

The £60million-rated teenager has reportedly told his agent, Mino Raiola, to seal a deal with Barca, but he’s also hinted at a possible move to Anfield to join up with international colleague Van Dijk.

Former United striker Berbatov is convinced by De Ligt’s burgeoning potential and has urged Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to go all out for the youngster.

‘One player I would love to see at Old Trafford is Ajax defender, Matthijs de Ligt, although I know every big club in Europe is after him,’ Berbatov told Betfair.

‘I watched him play against Real Madrid and he looks the real deal – so confident and assured for a player of his age.

According to Berbatov, Van Dijk will be giving De Ligt advice on the positives and negatives of joining an English club.

‘Having his international team-mate Virgil Van Dijk already in the Premier League could be a boost for any English team chasing De Ligt,’ Berbatov added.

‘The Liverpool man will be telling him how good the league is and that can make a real difference to where you choose to go.’

Earlier this month, De Ligt admitted that he views Van Dijk as a mentor and talked up a possible move to Liverpool.

‘Virgil is a player who has experience in the top leagues,’ De Ligt told Omnisport.

‘Of course you want to learn from him. It’s very useful to play next to him in the Dutch team.

‘It could happen [joining Liverpool]. He plays for Liverpool. A nice club.

‘But I’m not focused on this. I focus on Ajax. And then I will see where I will end up.’
