Martin Lewis rates seven brands of Mini Eggs – and Cadbury wasn't his favourite

Martin Lewis tested seven brands of Mini Eggs and surprisingly, Cadbury wasn’t his number one favourite.

Mini Eggs have become a popular Easter delight, with Cadbury’s version often regarded as the gold standard. Yet, with prices for Cadbury Mini Eggs climbing over recent years, chocoholics have been prompted to look further afield for their festive fix.

In response, Martin and his savvy team at Money Saving Expert decided to dive into a chocolate extravaganza, pitting various Mini Eggs against the iconic Cadbury. They lined up a tasty array of competitors: Poundland’s Easter Little Speckled Eggs at 70g for £1 a pop, Aldi’s Dairyfine Mini Chocolate Eggs at 80g for £1.25 each, Lidl’s Mister Choc Mini Eggs also at 80g for £1.25, Sainsbury’s own Speckled Mini Eggs weighing in at 80g for £1.50, Cadbury’s flagship Mini Eggs at 80g costing £1.85 per packet, the vegan concoction from Mummy Meegz Milk Chocolate Chickee Eggs at 80g for £2.75, and the moreish MandS Chocolate Speckled Eggs tipping the scale at 150g with a £3 price tag.

Martin took to Instagram, sharing a snapshot holding up a scorecard amidst an Easter parade of Mini Egg bowls. His post read: “Mini Egg comparison test currently underway in MSE Towers (7 different brands).”

He disclosed: “I managed to correctly identify the Cadbury ones but they were only my 2nd favourite. Collective results of the full taste test coming on MSE soon (it’s a hard job).”

The verdict is in from the MSE forum, and Martin Lewis, the savvy spender behind MoneySavingExpert.com, alongside 28 taste-testers, have cast their votes on the best Mini Eggs on offer. Cadbury emerged as the top choice for both flavour and appearance amidst a tough competition according to the collective opinion of the tasting panel. However, Poundland snagged the title for best value with its £1.43 per 100g rate – undercutting Cadbury’s price by nearly one pound.

In terms of flavour, Cadbury, M&S, and Poundland took the lead, while for looks alone, Cadbury, Lidl, and Aldi won the highest praise. Despite these insights, Martin didn’t divulge what his specific favourite was.

Bargain hunters might be intrigued by Poundland’s Mini Eggs, which MSE deduced cost 38% less per 100g than their Cadbury counterparts. It wasn’t all sweetness and light in the test; MSE highlighted that Cadbury’s Mini Eggs stood out as the only ones incorporating palm oil among the seven brands they assessed.

On Instagram, Martin’s post about the Mini Eggs taste test has racked up over 9,000 likes and close to 300 comments, with the most popular comment calling out Cadbury: “Points deducted for palm oil and additives please!” This attracted 106 likes from the Instagram community.

Another user quipped: “Oh dear! What a job – but someone’s got to do it.” Meanwhile, a delighted vegan customer exclaimed: “After not being able to eat mini eggs for 15 years (dairy intolerance) discovering the Mummy Meegz vegan chickie eggs this year has been a revelation!”.
