Manchester United star Lukaku was signed by Jose Mourinho in the summer of 2017 during the Portuguese’s time at Old Trafford.
The Belgium international was rumoured to be one of just a handful of players who still backed Mourinho before the 56-year-old’s sacking back in December.
Lukaku has failed to always hit the heights for Manchester United this season, though, despite recent braces against Crystal Palace and Southampton.
Tuttosport have claimed Inter would love to bring the powerhouse to Serie A when the transfer window reopens at the end of the campaign.
And it is also said they are willing to chuck Icardi and Perisic into a deal.
Should United agree to that, then Mourinho will have every right to shake his head in belief.
During his time at Old Trafford, he identified older, experienced players as the key to a fast ticket back to the summit of English game.
Perisic was his No 1 target in both the summer of 2017 and the summer of 2018 respectively.
Mourinho saw the Croatia international as the ideal forward to provide balance to his lop-sided attack.
With Anthony Martial, Alexis Sanchez and Marcus Rashford all operating on the left, a right winger was viewed as an essential signing.
But Ed Woodward said no.
In the eyes of the United chief, Perisic was too old to warrant the outlay the Red Devils would have to spend to lure him in.
In 2017, United’s offer of £43million fell short. The Red Devils refused to up it due to the fact Perisic is approaching the tail end of his career.
Therefore, should United agree to offload Lukaku for him, Mourinho could be forgiven for being outraged.
Woodward, though, could say yes because of Icardi.
The Argentine has his problems behind the scenes at Inter, with wife and agent Wanda Nara doing little to help the situation.
But there is no denying the fact he is a marquee name. On his day, one of the most ruthless forwards around.
Icardi is a Galactico and Woodward really, really likes Galacticos.
The pound signs would no doubt flash in front of the United chief’s eyes. Another world star to get fans buzzing and the revenue soaring.
Perisic would just be a necessary deal to swap Lukaku for Icardi. But, despite that, Mourinho could still be forgiven for feeling pangs of anger should his old top target finally make a move to Old Trafford.
