Man leaves foodies stunned with poached egg method he learnt in France

When it comes to culinary arts, everyone has their unique kitchen hacks.

Eggs are a versatile ingredient that people cook in various ways. A man, known as thatrecipe.us on TikTok, recently unveiled a French technique that’s said to “perfect” poached eggs.

To execute this, he positions a sieve over a pan of simmering water. He secures the sieve with a spoon and then cracks an egg into the sieve.

He allows this to bubble for two minutes before applying some oil to a paper towel and wiping it around the edges of a pan. In the video, he explained this prevents the water from “rising and overflowing”.

Next, you can remove the spoon from the sieve and gently lower the egg into the water. This is believed to initiate the cooking process, and the egg should be left for approximately another minute to heat thoroughly.

Once this step is completed, he seasons the egg with some salt and pepper, and lightly immerses the egg in the water again. If you favour a softer yolk, he advised leaving it in the water for two minutes.

Conversely, if you prefer a firmer yolk, it should be removed after four to five minutes. Once cooked, you can lift the sieve out of the pan and serve the egg on a plate.

Since the method was shared on social media, it’s left a lot of people rather stunned. It’s been viewed over 90,000 times, but foodies have dubbed it the “worst poached egg”.

As well as taking a long time to make, people pointed out that it just doesn’t look right. Many couldn’t get over just how many steps it took to whip up a simple egg.

One person said: “How to not make a poached egg…ever.” Another chimed in with: “Dude, that’s the worst.” A third replied: “This is a good prank for those who do not know how to cook.” Meanwhile, a fourth added: “Too messy and long.”

Not many people offered positive comments, and some even claimed it would take a long time to clean the sieve up after giving the quirky method a whirl. They claimed just because something is done differently, doesn’t always mean it’s “better”.

Some even made jokes about the length of time it took to make too. If you’re hoping for a speedy lunch, you may want to swerve this particular recipe. One person wrote: “How to make a poached egg in three hours.” Another also quipped: “Taking forever to make poached eggs.”
