An unprecedented level of pressure on the National Health Service in the wake of COVID-19 is creating opportunities for independent healthcare providers. Increasing numbers of patients are migrating towards private providers, paying from their own pocket for diagnostics and operations to avoid long waiting lists.
According to data gathered by the Private Healthcare Information Network, the number of self-funded procedures has risen to around 70,000 per quarter, a considerable increase on the 50,000 per quarter levels seen prior to COVID-19. Overall, the number of self-paying patients rose to 258,445 in 2020, representing an increase of 58,770 compared with figures for 2019.
