Broadcaster Louis Theroux has said he is preparing for a ‘full head shave’ due to his alopecia.

The British documentarian, 54, said he is likely to completely shear off his hair in the next 12 months and will take inspiration from actors Stanley Tucci and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson – who are both bald.

The TV star, who has been documenting his alopecia – the medical term for hair loss – shared a series of photographs of his hair to his Instagram page.

‘Latest from alopecia-land. I’ve cut the hair short because I realised the longer it was the worse it looked. But it’s patchy AF and I’m basically preparing the way for a full head shave some time in the next 12 months,’ he wrote in the caption next to photos of his hair with some patchiness around the parting.

‘Big glasses a la Tucci, big muscles a la Dwayne Johnson, plus a year-round tan. That’s the formula,’ he vowed of his planned transformation.

‘I’ve included a last photo from 1994 that I stumbled on yesterday as a reminder that the hair was always a problem, which I will have to worry about less and less as it disappears.

‘My alopecia took away a lot of my facial hair – halved my eyebrows, and decimated my beard so much that all I’m left with is a straggly spattering of what, when grown, looks like a poor attempt at a handlebar moustache!’ shared fan Joe Hartley, adding: ‘Thanks for being loud and proud about what you’re going through. It helps!’

There are different types of alopecia and various medical conditions that cause hair loss, according to the charity Alopecia UK.

It’s a condition that causes hair loss and can affect many areas of the body, but predominantly impacts a person’s scalp, head, or face.

Some forms of the condition can be autoimmune, such as alopecia areata, which can cause patches of hair loss.
