Keira Knightley has had her say on her controversial Love Actually plot, sharing that she actually mentioned it was ‘quite creepy’ while on set.
Richard Curtis’ iconic Christmas movie was first released in November, 2003, following a string of intertwining plots and characters across London, in the build up to December 25.
One of those storylines follows the love triangle of Mark (Andrew Lincoln) who attempts to shun Keira’s character, Juliet, even though she’s marrying his best friend, Peter (Chiwetel Ejiofor) – the audience eventually realizes that he has unrequited feelings for her.
In an infamous scene, Mark turns up at their house armed with placards confessing his true love, set to a recording of carol singers so that his best friend is none the wiser.
It’s a moment that hasn’t quite stood the test of time – and has been pulled apart in think pieces in recent years – but Keira revealed that she noticed the glaring issues almost immediately.
Speaking to the LA Times, the Black Doves actress shared that she can barely remember taking part in the shoot as she was only there for a matter of days when she was a teenager – however, the infamous plot has stuck with her over the years.
‘The slightly stalkerish aspect of it — I do remember that,’ she said. ‘My memory is of Richard, who is now a very dear friend, of me doing the scene, and him going, “No, you’re looking at [Andrew] like he’s creepy,” and I’m like [in a dramatic whisper], “But it is quite creepy.”
‘And then having to redo it to fix my face to make him seem not creepy.’
When asked if she felt there was a ‘creep factor’ about the scene while shooting, she continued: ‘I mean, there was a creep factor at the time, right? Also, I knew I was 17. It only seems like a few years ago that everybody else realized I was 17.’
‘Most of my films I have either never seen, or I have only seen once,’ she added of speculation that she had only watched the finished product once in the 21 years it has been out. ‘So it’s nothing against Love Actually.
‘It’s lovely because it didn’t do as well as everyone thought it was going to when it came out. Suddenly, like three or four years later, it took on a life of its own. It’s the only film I’ve had that found this life afterward.’
Keira isn’t the only member of the cast who has issues with that particular plot, as Chiwetel said that his on-screen best friend was ‘undoubtedly’ terrible.
‘I may be biased, I may not be the jury, but I’ve said it to his face!’ the actor told ComicBook.com, teasing that ‘if there was a conversation between the two of them afterwards, it could become heated.
‘I’ve noticed over the 20 years or so since the film came out, that sometimes people find it romantic – the gesture, the cards, all of that stuff – and other times, people just think, “What is he doing? He should have been arrested.”’
Now we wish there was a Love Actually 2…
