Kate Garraway says sorry to EastEnders' Bobby Brazier after NTA mishap with daughter

Kate Garraway has amused listeners with a humorous anecdote from the National Television Awards, where she found herself apologising to EastEnders’ fresh face Bobby Brazier due to her daughter’s overzealous excitement.

Speaking on her Smooth radio show, Kate recounted the glamorous night and how her daughter couldn’t contain her enthusiasm upon meeting the young actor, even going so far as to interrupt his bathroom queue.

“Let’s talk NTAs,” Kate initiated, sharing that despite feeling “completely overwhelmed” she was also “so grateful” for clinching the Best Authored Documentary award for her moving film, Derek’s Story.

She effused about her children, Darcey and Billy, brimming with pride for their father, but conceded, “Although Darcey was also very over excited running everywhere nobbling Love Islanders and reality stars for photos. Lovely to see her having fun. But particular apologies must go to Bobby Brazier, who she actually interrupted while he was queuing for the loo!” Kate chuckled, adding, “Poor soul. He was very nice about it.”

The glittering NTAs were held at the O2 Arena on September 11, celebrating Kate’s documentary which touchingly documented her ‘final chapter’ with her late husband Derek, who tragically died in January 2024 after an extended struggle with health issues arising from Covid-19.

Derek, originally from Chorley and a political lobbyist by profession, endured a devastating ordeal with kidney failure, brain inflammation, and liver damage as a consequence of his condition, as reported by Lancs Live, reports OK! Magazine.

Kate delivered a moving speech upon receiving her award, saying: “I really genuinely did not expect this, goodness me. This is a bittersweet one isn’t it? It’s very bitter to be here, with the gorgeous Darcey and Billy.”

She went on, her voice laden with emotion: “I promised them they didn’t have to say anything. We’re halfway through the first year of firsts really. A first Easter and first birthdays, without Derek. It’s so strange to be here for the first Television Awards without him.”

The beloved television host shared the tragic news of Derek’s death on January 3, in a touching Instagram post: “I’m sad to have to tell you all that my darling husband Derek has passed away. As some of you may know he has been critically ill following a cardiac arrest in early December which, because of the damage inflicted by Covid in March 2020, led to further complications.”

Kate continued, sharing intimate details of Derek’s final moments: “Derek was surrounded by his family in his final days and I was by his side holding his hand throughout the last long hours and when he passed. I have so much more to say, and of course I will do so in due course, but for now I just want to thank all the medical teams who fought so hard to save him and to make his final moments as comfortable and dignified as possible.”

In her closing words, she expressed her deep appreciation and said goodbye: “Sending so much love and thanks to all of you who have so generously given our family so much support. Rest gently and peacefully now Derek, my love, I was so lucky to have you in my life.”
