A CLOSE ally of Jeremy Corbyn said a Labour member who posted an offensive anti-Semitic image on Facebook shouldn’t be suspended.
Leaked emails given to The Times revealed that Kala Bibby shouldn’t face a harsh punishment because it was “anti-Israel, not anti-Jewish”, and she was let off with a warning.
It’s the second claim in two days that alleges Mr Corbyn’s office has interfered in cases of anti-Semitism in the Labour party.
Labour sources have said that the two examples were from before the party’s rules were overhauled, and a disgruntled former employee was leaking the material.
In May last year an official emailed senior Labour staff, including new General Secretary Jennie Formby, alerting them to a complaint and recommending suspension.
“The most worrying of which being the final one that depicts a monster with the star of David printed on it on the face of the statue of liberty suggesting that Jewish people control America,” they wrote.
But less than a week later they received a reply which said: “I think this should be a reminder of conduct only. This should particularly point to the use of imagery which is both associated with Jewish people generally, as well as being associated with Israel, it should also point to the use of abusive language in post 2 (‘Racist zionist bastards’).”
They argued that the post was directed at Israel, not at Jews, and the member should not be suspended.
Yesterday an ally of Mr Corbyn told officials not to suspend a member who defended an anti-Semitic mural. which the Labour boss himself had to apologise for backing too.
But Labour MPs hit out at the latest revelations.
Jewish MP Ruth Smeeth told the paper: “This email exchange and the images discussed make me feel physically sick.”
Wes Streeting added: “I don’t see how anyone could objectively look upon this grotesque image and fail to conclude that this is racist, antisemitic filth of the highest order. Not only is it worthy of the Nazis, it literally features on a far-right website.”
A Labour party spokesperson said: “This is a malicious, selective briefing from a disgruntled former employee. It is a deeply unfair attack on staff working in good faith to apply the Party rule book to individual cases and progress complaints through the party’s disciplinary processes.”
Meanwhile, later today the Jewish Labour Movement will decide on whether to continue to stay alligned to the Labour party.
Mr Corbyn and 100 MPs have written to them to pursuade them to stay within the party.
But their chair, Luciana Berger, left the party two weeks ago.
