Jamie Carragher concedes that Liverpool will likely need six signings if they want to continue evolving – even though they have dominated the Premier League. Arne Slot hardly acted in his first summer but is now tipped to oversee several arrivals come July.

Liverpool have continued to excel with the playing staff that Jurgen Klopp built, with the majority poised to win a second top flight crown, adding to the one they claimed in 2020. Despite that, holes remain in an ageing squad that many believe are reaching the end of its cycle.

Often a team that dominates the Premier League would be one with few chinks in its armour, but Carragher maintains that “no football team can ever be considered the finished article”. The former Red has tipped the leading lights at Liverpool to build a squad that eclipses this current crop – even if they don’t match their achievements.

He said in the Telegraph : “We are watching a very good Liverpool team on the brink of greatness. My suspicion is that during the course of his reign, Arne Slot and the recruitment team above him will have constructed a better squad, regardless of whether they match or eclipse this year’s likely success.”

Much has been made of Manchester City’s decline following four successive Premier League titles. They’ve had to act quick, signing several players in January, to address major issues and Carragher admitted that this Liverpool team won’t need just the odd signing to keep them at the top.

Instead he has called on a raft of new transfers if they want to remain at the summit and maintained that notable arrivals are needed regardless of whether Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold – who are all out of contract – choose to stay at Anfield.

He said: “When a team win the league, you anticipate one or two big signings to keep the juggernaut moving. In all honesty, when looking at Slot’s squad, it feels like he may need as many as six before next summer. That is a statement you would expect to make about an underperforming team, or one requiring an overhaul. Reinforcements are required independent of whether the big three out-of-contract stars stay.”

Carragher has cited the need to add two new faces in the backline: One to challenge left-back Andy Robertson, who has commanded his spot for almost a decade and a new centre-half so that the pressure is taken off Van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate.

The Sky Sports pundit also wanted to see two new midfielders bought in, one to ease the burden on Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister, with another required in a playmaking role to “score and create more than Dominik Szoboszlai”. Carragher also called on two more forwards to come into the front three to compliment Salah.
