Bridgerton star Regé-Jean Page has responded to fresh rumours he’s set to be cast as British Secret Service agent James Bond. Ever since Daniel Craig stepped down as the famous 007 after No Time To Die in 2021, speculation has been rife over who will take on the mantle and lead the franchise into its next chapter. Up against contenders such as James Norton, Gangs of London’s Joe Cole, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Babygirl star Harris Dickinson, the 37-year-old has been hovering near the top of the list following his star turn as the Duke of Hastings in the first season of Netflix’s period drama Bridgerton in 2020.
In fact, rumours that he would be donning Bond’s tailored suit first began to swirl when he made the sudden announcement he’d not be returning for season two of the sexy show. Despite his on-screen wife Daphne Bridgerton, played by Phoebe Dynevor, making several cameos, the Duke was too busy to appear.
Commenting on the rumours himself, Regé-Jean told Entertainment Tonight that James Bond “is not something I’ve thought about very much,” before revealing that he is focusing on his current projects.
Michael Fassbender, himself a bookies favourite to play the literary action hero, has now thrown his support behind Regé-Jean. The two actors star in Black Bag, an American spy thriller directed by Steven Soderbergh. The film is already receiving rave reviews and currently has a score of 96% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. While promoting their latest movie, Michael revealed he thinks his co-star would be an excellent choice.
He told US Weekly: “Well, I think Regé-Jean Page could be a frontrunner after this, to be honest. I think he’s fantastic. He’s got all the attributes. So, let’s wait and see.” In addition to Michael, 47, former James Bond star Naomie Harris, 48, revealed she wants the Bridgerton star to take over the role.
The actress, who starred as Miss Moneypenny in three of the Bond movies alongside Daniel Craig, said: “I think Regé would be amazing. I’d love Regé to be the next James Bond. But who knows? I don’t know what’s going to happen.”
