I sent my 13 and 9-year-old kids to Tesco to do the food shop – they spent £137 and only bought 4 healthy things

PARENTS know how important it is for kids to learn about money, especially with the current cost of living crisis.

Whilst the weekly shop might not be on the national curriculum, one mum decided to get her little ones involved and it’s safe to say they won’t be getting their five a day.

Shopping for groceries isn’t the most glamourous task, so it’s not surprising that mum-of-seven Kristel was eager for her kids to take over.

Armed with their mum’s purse and few words of wisdom, her two kids head for their local Tesco to get a week’s worth of food for the family.

Unsurprisingly, the 13 and 9-year-olds weren’t so concerned with healthy meals with the pair loading up their trolley full of surgery snacks.

Only four healthy items made it to the checkout with a few kitchen staples thrown in to appease mum – as Kristel revealed in a viral Tiktok video.

First on the shopping lists was chocolate cereal, with the kids getting four boxes of the breakfast snack as well as a plainer box of wheat biscuits.

Like many teenagers, the 13-year-old was eager to stock up on instant noodles too with at least 8 packets making the journey home.

The family biscuit tin won’t be empty for a while, as the youngsters got an assortment of own-brand treats as well as Oreos and Cadbury Squares.

Rather than just getting plain bread and making sandwiches for lunch, the kids also bought multi-packs of crisps and pan au chocolat too.

However, mum had clearly had a word before the pair left home as few kitchen and household basics did make into their basket.

In fact, Kristel’s kids bought chicken thighs and pieces to bulk out the weeks’ worth of meals along with lettuce and tomatoes.

Cupboard staples like bread, milks and potatoes were also on their shopping list with the proud mum showing on their purchases.

They’d even remember to buy household essentials like washing detergent, fabric conditioner and loo rolls – although we are not sure there was enough for entire week.

For those who are wondering how much the kids spent, their total came to £137 with mum possibly having to go back to the shop for extra bits.

Despite the experiment being a bit of a mixed bag, it seems Kristel wasn’t unimpressed with her kids efforts and wrote in the caption: “She makes me so proud, I don’t know what we would do without her.”

In the comments her followers were also pretty impressed with the kids’ efforts and even joked about the high food bill.

One wrote: “I’m just impressed that with how long that receipt is it only came up to £137.”

“They did so well!” gushed another, adding: “You could tell they got excited down the biscuit aisle bless them but did better than most children their age!”

Others were less impressed, with a Tiktok user commenting ‘[Only] 4 healthy things’ as some also remarked on the amount of biscuits.
