Bob is a koi that may or may not have a rather tired-looking man’s soul trapped inside him. He might have been one of the cursed human-faced fish from the Monty Python movie.
That, or he’s just a fish with some parks on his head that look a good deal like a man’s face.
Malcolm Pawson bought the ‘friendly’ Japanese fish three years ago when he was just run-of-the-mill koi. Nothing special, well, for a £150 koi at least.
But Bob is a species of koi called kōhaku, known for their striking white and orange colours that can actually change over time.
Sunlight, diet and water conditions can make the fish’s patchy colourations more vibrant or paler.
While living in Malcolm’s back garden koi pond in Leeds, Bob started forming black marks on his head that resemble eyes, nose and mouth.
Bob has become so infamous in the local community that people pop over to the garden landscaper’s house to say hello to the uncanny fish.
‘My friends and family love him. My daughter’s friends are always asking to come see and feed him,’ the father-of-three said.
‘Even people who walk past my house stop and stare if I have the gate open.”I welcome anyone in to see him, he gets all the attention, it’s amazing.
‘I bought him three years ago as I noticed him as the most friendly fish in the shop.’
The Harpy-grade koi has become a star of Malcolm’s TikTok, with one user remarking: ‘Looks like our dad.’
We’re not entirely sure if that’s a good thing or a bad thing, to be honest.
Malcolm says he’s determined to make ‘Bob the human fish famous’. On TikTok, users called him ‘beautiful’, ‘flipping creepy’ and ‘handsome’.
‘He looks like Pete off Gavin and Stacey,’ added another.
In one clip, Bob can be seen racing to the front of the gasp of koi when Malcolm strolled over to feed them.
‘I am looking at making the pond even bigger now as the fish have grown so big,’ he said.
‘Bob is very greedy, my partner calls me a feeder.’
