‘Hogwarts Legacy 2’ is “high priority” and will tie into HBO ‘Harry Potter’ remake

Warner Bros. has confirmed that a sequel to Hogwarts Legacy is the studio’s highest priority and will tie into HBO’s Harry Potter remake.

Hogwarts Legacy was released in February 2023 and despite some fans boycotting the game over Harry Potter creator J.K. Rowlings anti-trans comments, it went on to become the biggest selling game of the year. Warner Bros. have since confirmed the title has sold over 30million copies.

Shortly after launch, developers confirmed there were no plans for Hogwarts Legacy DLC although the game will be updated to take advantage of the PlayStation 5 Pro.

In January, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment president David Haddad confirmed a number of Harry Potter games were in the works following the success of Hogwarts Legacy while a job listing at developers Avalanche Software hinted at a sequel. The studio was looking to fill a number of roles to work on a new “open world, action RPG” that would have elements of magic and combat.

Now Warner Bros. Discovery chief financial officer Gunnar Wiedenfels has confirmed “a successor to Hogwarts Legacy is one of the biggest priorities,” during a Bank Of America conference (via Variety). He went on to suggest that the sequel would be released “in a couple of years”.

“We have known for some time that fans are looking for more things in this world, and so we’re spending a lot of time thinking about that,” president of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment David Haddad told Variety in a separate interview. “Our insights tell us that there are not huge distinctions between a younger version of a fan and an older version of a fan. They’re just deep ‘Harry Potter’ fans, and we try to build authentic experiences to delight them.”

Hogwarts Legacy was set 100 years before the events of the Harry Potter books but a sequel will reportedly tie into HBO’s upcoming adaptation of the series, with the games team coordinating some of the big-picture storytelling elements of the sequel with the storylines that will play out in the HBO series.

The HBO adaptation of Harry Potter is currently due to launch in 2026 and will be a “more in-depth” look at the Wizarding World.
