A stray dog has been filmed making a heroic effort to rescue her five puppies at risk of drowning in a monsoon flood.

The dog had only just given birth inside a gutter in Gowripet, Kolar, in southern India, when the downpours hit.

The heavy rain caused widespread flooding on 2 September, with the gutter quickly filling with water.

In desperation, the mother was seen dragging her puppies out one by one and carrying them to higher ground under steps on the other side of the road.

Despite the very narrow opening, the mother struggled her way in and out for each of her newborn babies.

Locals watching the rescue effort said they were moved by the dog’s determination.

Some tried to provide shelter to the dog but she refused and stayed with her puppies in the tiny safe spot, they said.

Lakshman Rao, who lives nearby, said: ‘She is very attached to her pups. She does not leave them even to feed herself.

‘We will ensure that she is well fed from now on.’

The Monsoon rains were so heavy in Kolar last week that gates at the city’s dam had to be opened for the first time since 2016.

Rescue teams were sent out to evacuate families as the incessant rain refused to stop.

And on Monday, a dad of three died as he was swept away while rescuing his children from a flash flood close to Kolar dam.

Rizwan Khan, 35, was with his young family in Baba Jhiri when they suddenly found themselves surrounded by raging waters.

He managed to carry his children to safety but his foot became jammed by a rock before he was carried downstream by the tide, the Times of India reports.
