RAEGAN Pile fell pregnant at just 18-years-old. She had just broken up with her ex boyfriend who she’d dated for a year, so, with help from her family, she decided to put the baby up for adoption.
Now ten years on, Raegan doesn’t regret the decision she made and she and her high school love actually made amends, and are now married with another child.
In a personal essay shared on Love What Matters, Raegan explained how she and her now-husband met at high school.
They dated for about a year before breaking up and they went their separate ways.
The met up some time later and shared a “magical night” together – but one month later, Raegan found out she was pregnant.
She explained that he didn’t react very well when she first told him the news – but at just 18-years-old she understood why.
Then, she had to tell her parents, and at the time she had “never seen my father so speechless” – while her mum was in tears.
In the week that followed, her parents helped her figure out what to do, as she “tried to keep food down.”
Meanwhile, he ex-boyfriend and father of the baby wanted “back in the picture” – but they decided “adoption was best.”
“We knew we couldn’t give our baby the life we dreamed for him on our own,” she wrote, and she decided to meet prospective adoptive parents two months later.
She admitted to feeling nervous but she “didn’t need to ask questions because I knew they are going to be my son’s parents.”
She met their son the next day who would be an older brother to her unborn child – and she knew right away that “my baby would be perfectly loved in this family.”
Before long, her due date came around and she recalled feeling” devastated that the baby hadn’t come yet.”
But the next day, feeling “extra tired”, her waters broke and Raegan thought she had “peed” herself.
She said she called her brother while her mum got the doula on the phone, and within an hour they were at the hospital.
Her son’s new parents and brother arrived at the hospital not long after and she said she was “so happy” that they made it for the birth.
He arrived screaming, she recalled, and “then a calm came over the room when the doctor placed him on my chest.”
Raegan was left alone in the room with her baby and her mum, but she “didn’t want to hold him long because I knew I wouldn’t let him go.”
She told him she loved him as she counted his fingers and toes, before telling her mum “it’s time.”
Raegan said his new parents came back into the room and “bittersweet tears were in both of our eyes.”
She gave her son “one last kiss” before handing him over to his new mum – that was her “one request”.
Raegan described the moment as “comforting”, seeing his new parents “beam with pride” and love.
Going home was “strange” for her, but she admitted that she didn’t cry.
That was until her parents called her for dinner later that night, and it suddenly hit her.
Despite this, Raegan said “I don’t regret my decision”.
“It’s been 10 years and my decision is always reconfirmed every time I see them. We see him every year on his birthday,” she said.
It was not long after she gave birth that her and the baby’s father made amends, and now they’re happily married and have a new baby of their own.
They have just celebrated their seventh wedding anniversary and, unfortunately, suffered three miscarriages before finally falling pregnant again.
“It’s crazy that 10 years ago I thought my life was ending when in reality, it was only just beginning,” she said.
