LABOUR was yesterday hit by a fresh an anti-Semitism storm as activists mounted a controversial bid to reinstate Chris Williamson.
The Derby MP – a top Corbyn ally – was suspended for saying the party had been “too apologetic” about the racism crisis.
Hard-left activists at several branches, including Sheffield and Kensington, have tabled or passed motions demanding he is reinstated.
Meanwhile, Diane Abbott became the latest Corbyn ally to be embroiled in the crisis as her local branch said it was a “scandal” to describe Labour as racist.
She reportedly stayed silent as Jewish members were in tears as her Hackney party passed the motion by 45 votes to 35 on Thursday night.
The motion also called for trigger ballots to boot out Labour MPs – paving the way for a purge of moderates.
Patrick Moule, a Labour activist in Hackney, furiously branded the move a “disgrace”.
He said: “Jewish members bravely spoke up and their lived experience was ignored and denied.
“I feel ashamed and bereft that my political home of over a decade has sunk so low.”
Emily Benn, the granddaughter of the late Labour grandee Tony Benn – a mentor to Mr Corbyn – also slammed it.
She said: “Yet Another day of being truly ashamed of my party I used to love, but now no longer recognise.
“On this evidence, there is very little hope left for The Labour Party”
Meanwhile, the Sheffield party voted by 40 to 1 to back a motion saying Mr Williamson has been “falsely accused of anti-Semitism” and demanding he is reinstated.
They also said the crisis has been used to carry out a “witch hunt of Corbyn supporters”.
Mr Corbyn tonight furious demands to intervene and expel the Sheffield party.
A Labour Party source said: “CLPs are not involved in individual disciplinary cases and can’t influence them, which would be entirely inappropriate.
“Rather than looking inwards and fueling internal divisions, we should be focusing on campaigning, developing our hugely popular manifesto and working together to fight the Tories.”
Ms Abbott’s office did not respond to requests for comment.
