Escape to the Country star Jules Hudson’s health after lifestyle ‘took its toll’

Jules Hudson, best known as the presenter of Escape to the Country, recently opened up about his health concerns after years of working around heavy machinery.

In a candid Instagram post, the 54-year-old shared that he has worried about the impact his lifestyle has had on his hearing, admitting that it may have “taken its toll” over time.

Jules, who is known for his hands-on approach to various DIY projects, confessed that a “lifetime” spent around noisy equipment could have caused more harm than he initially realised.

He took the opportunity to encourage his followers to prioritise their own health by getting regular hearing checkups.

The presenter took a three-month break from the BBC show towards the end of 2023, citing burnout as the reason for his hiatus.

During this time, he immersed himself in a new hobby—furniture-making.

Sharing his creations with his 62,400 Instagram followers, Jules explained that he had been working on a 12-week woodworking course.

He went on to jokingly point out a couple of “slip-ups” he made while describing his handcrafted Enzo Mari-inspired chairs.

In his post, Jules mentioned a collaboration with Specsavers, highlighting how small misunderstandings — like his verbal slip-ups— can be due to not hearing things correctly.

He pointed out the importance of hearing health and revealed his plans to get his own hearing checked.

“I would love to think my hearing is perfect,” he joked, “but in reality, a lifetime spent around plant machinery and power tools has probably taken its toll, and if it has, now I know what I can do about it.”
