It came after ex-Newsnight host Maitlis accused BBC chiefs of unfairly rebuking her for blasting former No10 aide Dominic Cummings on air over an alleged lockdown breach.

Maitlis — now with Global — said an “active Conservative agent” infiltrated the Corporation when former No10 communications chief Robbie Gibb joined the board.

BBC chairman Richard Sharp told MPs that Maitlis’s claims were “completely wrong”.

Director-general Tim Davie, meanwhile, said Maitlis, 52, breached BBC impartiality rules.

MP Steve Brine handed him a dossier of anti-Tory coverage seen on the Beeb including Brexit-bashing on EastEnders and Labour stooges on news bulletins.

Mr Brine said the BBC had “a lot of work to do” to prove impartiality and Mr Davie admitted occasional failures to be neutral.

He also admitted that getting outspoken footie presenter Gary Lineker to toe the line was a “work in progress”.
