EastEnders fans spot Grant Mitchell affair twist as they predict who outs Cindy Beale

EastEnders fans are convinced the soap is set for a ‘Sharongate’ twist as they predict who will out Cindy Beale’s romance with her former step-son Junior Knight

EastEnders is gearing up for another explosive Christmas Day, with Cindy Beale (played by Michelle Collins) at the centre of the drama.

Viewers of the BBC soap will be aware that Cindy has been embroiled in a scandalous affair with her former step-son Junior Knight (Micah Balfour), and their clandestine relationship is about to be spectacularly unveiled. However, fans have noticed a striking similarity to a classic episode from the show’s past.

The latest teaser reveals that the festive cheer in Walford will be abruptly cut short when George Knight’s (Colin Salmon) Christmas lunch descends into chaos after damning proof of Cindy’s affair ends up in the wrong hands. Given Cindy’s less than favourable reputation among her Albert Square neighbours, the question arises – who is behind the blackmail?

Anna Knight (Molly Rainford) unwraps a small gift to find a USB stick inside. Upon playing it, Cindy’s secret is laid bare for the Beale family to witness.

This plot twist has led EastEnders fans to draw comparisons with the infamous ‘Sharongate’ storyline, where Sharon Watts’ (Letitia Dean) illicit affair held viewers captive back in 1994, reports the Manchester Evening News.

A staggering 30 million viewers tuned in to watch the iconic Queen Vic scene where Sharon Mitchell’s affair with her brother-in-law Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) was revealed by her husband Grant (Ross Kemp).

Grant had obtained a tape recording of Sharon admitting to sleeping with his brother and tearing off his clothes. In an act of revenge, he played the tape at the pub during Phil and Kathy’s (Gillian Taylforth) engagement party.

Grant pulled a jaw-dropping stunt in front of everyone, switching the tunes for Sharon’s confession tape, which left the Square utterly gobsmacked. Speed up 30 years on the Walford time machine and it seems history is craving a rerun, what with Cindy being cornered by her own affair-exposing audio message.

EastEnders buffs across social media have been quick to draw parallels between the legendary ‘Sharongate’ saga and Cindy’s current shenanigans.

One fan popped up online commenting: “Who combined Sharongate and Lauren’s festive present surprise (Outing Max and Stacey’s affair) to out Cindy. Can we get a cat fight between Kathy and Cindy then Kathy can bold patch Cindy like she did Sharon. But seriously I need to know who is behind outing Cindy.”

Another one chimed in: “Just like Sharon Phil and Grant with the interview Michelle did with Sharon.”

Cranking up the excitement, another tweeted: “Audio played in the Vic about an affair yet again.”

Another resident soap connoisseur added with excitement: “Oh it’s gonna be like Sharongate all over again and I am here for it!!!! #EastEnders”, while someone else took a moment of reflection: “30th Anniversary since Sharongate.”
