A video game adaptation that may have been released a bit ahead of its time is back to streaming on Netflix. As of July 1, Warcraft was made available to watch again on the popular streaming platform.
Warcraft fell short of reaching its box office expectations, given its high budget, and it was not seen as a big financial success. The critics were also unkind to the movie, giving the video game adaptation a Rotten Tomatoes score of 29%. However, filmgoers enjoyed the movie much more than the critics, as it holds a much higher audience score of 76%. Warcraft has also developed a cult following in the years since its release in 2016, seen by many as one of the more underrated video game films.

Warcraft was directly inspired by the video game franchise. It was directed by Duncan Jones, who co-wrote the script with Charles Leavitt. The movie tells the story of an orc shaman who opens a portal to the human realm of Azeroth, proceeding to organize a conquering army called the Horde. Those fighting back on the other side include King Llane, the warrior Anduin Lothar, and the wizard Medivh. As the war ramps up, each side must question if the bloodshed is worth it.
Was the Warcraft Movie Released Too Soon?
The film might have been released too soon, coming years ahead of the recent boom that has seen many video game adaptations being met with great success. Films like Super Mario Bros. Movie and Sonic the Hedgehog, along with TV shows like Fallout and The Last of Us, have been very successful, leading to filmgoers largely taking video game adaptations more seriously. Maybe more filmgoers would have given Warcraft a chance if it had been released during this new era.

Because the movie has a cult following, there continues to be a certain level of fan interest in seeing another movie get made. Recent video game adaptations finding success could increase the odds of that happening, though it doesn’t help that nearly a decade has already passed since the film was released.
