PlayStation favourite Croc: Legend Of The Gobbos is getting a remaster, as original developer Argonaut Games makes a comeback.
While it was officially announced last year, the revival of Croc: Legend Of The Gobbos has been revealed in a trailer.
Originally released on the PlayStation in 1996, Croc: Legend Of The Gobbos might not be as highly regarded as other platformers like Banjo-Kazooie or Crash Bandicoot, but it was a big success at the time, selling over three million copies and spawning a sequel.
Almost 30 years later, Croc is getting a remaster for consoles and PC in 2024, and it’s coming from a revived version of the original developer, Argonaut Games.
In a statement, Argonaut Games co-CEO Gary Sheinwald said: ‘I worked closely with [Argonaut founder] Jez [San] on the design and production of Starglider, Argonaut’s first big hit back in 1986.
‘So to take up the mantle of relaunching Argonaut Games nearly four decades later brings me full circle, and we have further exciting announcements in the pipeline in the coming months.’
Along with Starglider and its sequel, Argonaut Games is known for collaborating with Nintendo on Star Fox and Star Fox 2. The studio, originally founded in 1982 by Jez San, was shut down in 2007, with many of the team going onto work at Batman: Arkham developer Rocksteady Studios.
The first project from the revamped Argonaut Games will be the remastered version of Croc, which is shown off in a brief trailer. No specific release date is given beyond the 2024 window, but it promises high-definition graphics and updated modern controls.
The remaster will also include a ‘Crocipedia’, which is described as a ‘digital museum containing long-lost development assets such as game design documents, concept art, animation tests, team member interviews, and much more’.
While it remains to be seen whether a remaster of Croc: Legend Of The Gobbos will actually be enjoyable to play in 2024, it will, at the very least, be a huge nostalgia rush for many.
