Rishi Sunak had the Commons in stitches at PMQs this lunchtime with a gag about former Tory MP Nadine Dorries.
Sir Keir Starmer began the session by laying into the Tories over their double by-election defeat last week, welcoming both the new Labour MPs for Tamworth and Mid Bedfordshire to his green benches.
He welcomed Ms Dorries’ successor in Mid Beds, saying he is the first Labour MP ever “to represent those beautiful towns and villages”.
“He defied the odds, history, and of course the fantasy Lib Dem bar charts!”
Mr Sunak broke from partisan tradition, also welcoming Alistair Strathern to the Commons and launching another dig at former Tory Cabinet Minister Nadine Dorries.
“May I join [Sir Keir] in welcoming the new members to their places, after all I suspect the new member for Mid Beds may actually support me a little bit more than the last one!”
Ms Dorries became a constant thorn in Mr Sunak’s side in her final months in parliament.
More to come…
