Chef shares 'foolproof' method to deseed peppers – using just your thumb

A chef has revealed her tried and tested method for deseeding a pepper and it’s been branded “fool-proof” and a “game-changer” by other culinary experts.

There’s a saying when it comes to how to make life easier for yourself – “work smarter, not harder”. And it basically means if you find a way of doing something that is more efficient, do it!

Now a cook has shared how she likes to remove the stalk from pepper that hardly takes any time at all and gets rid of all the pesky seeds as well.

Taking to TikTok the Commune Kitchen cooking school in Singapore regularly shares tips and tricks from its chefs on how to create tasty dishes.

In one of their most recent clips they explained how to handle a pepper. Taking a chunky red one, a culinary expert revealed: “This is the easiest way to deseed a pepper. Just place it down in front of you and use your thumbs to push the stalk and green bit down.”

Pushing your thumbs down on the stalk until you hear a ‘pop’ you can then pull the pepper in two and give both sides a good bang on the chopping board. Demonstrating exactly this, it showed the stalk and seeds falling out completely leaving none inside.

People watching were thrilled with the hack and rushed to thank the chef for the demonstration. One person replied: “I had to pick my jaw off of the floor. Amazing!”

Someone else added: “This will save me so much time, and I nearly chop my thumbs off every time I deseed a pepper.” And a third user gushed: “Game-changer! Basically fool-proof – I do this every time!!”

Using your thumb to deseed a pepper isn’t the only useful culinary hack you should know. Cutting onions can feel like a chore – but this easy hack makes the task a breeze.

According to one chef, cutting an onion the correct way will save you time in the kitchen as you’ll be able to dice it up in seconds – although the hack unfortunately does nothing to stop you from crying.

In a video by Alma Fernanda, a Le Cordon Bleu-trained chef, most of us have been chopping our onions incorrectly. Many of us wouldn’t think twice about hacking off both ends of the onion, peeling off the skin, chopping it in half and then getting to work on dicing it – but this isn’t the right way.

Instead, we should only cut off one end of the onion, leaving the other end intact. Then, cut the onion in half so that each half still has some of the end connected to it.

Peel each half as normal, and then make incisions into the onion along the length of it, taking care not to cut all the way to the end where the root is. Then, you can cut in lines toward the root and your onion will be perfectly diced – leaving you with just the root to throw in the bin when you’re finished.
